that's a solid point. that being the case, I think the movie would have been lessened if Del Toro had gone full Kenneth Branagh and had Mia Goth portray the resurrected Bride as well

Movie Victor does jump to that conclusion too, and smarter people than I have already commented on it

I thought she was really cool, the scene in the confessional was comedy gold (and filmed in a cathedral in my town I believe!)

to be honest I read that as less of a retread of Shape of Water and more as a surrogate older-sister/mother relationship. Del Toro even avoids having the creature specifically ask for female companionship, the language is more ambiguous iirc

I reread it this week for the first time in 14 years so it's fresher for me! I think the thread is on point though. A lot of the softening of the Creature feels inevitable to anyone who's been following Del Toro's oeuvre, he's been putting his own thematic spin on adaptations since the Hellboy days
