What's your sign?

11. Rotting Christ - Κατά τον Δαίμονα Εαυτού

This album changed my brain chemistry when it dropped back in 2013. A thundering journey through occult darkness and ancient battlefields, building on the foundations of previous albums Theogonia and AEALO, culminating in the apocalyptic ΞΧΣ - 666.

10. Suidakra - Emprise to Avalon

The opening riff of Pendragon's Fall made me fall in love with heavy metal all in one go. There are bands I hold in much higher esteem, but Suidakra will always have a special place in my heart for that.

9. Viy (1967)

Highly recommend this Soviet horror gem, dripping with Orthodox gothic and featuring some damn fun creature designs and practical effects. Where else are you gonna see an undead witch surfing her own coffin through the air?

7. Pagan Rites of Rural Thessaly

As yet untranslated in English, Chrysostomos' Tsaprailis' shadowy mosaic of vignettes is a chilling exercise in original Greek folk horror, blending real folklore and mythological miasma with contemporary influences from cosmic horror and black metal imagery.

6. Jim Henson's The Storyteller

A wonderful collection of fairy tale retellings, with puppetry and creature design on par with Henson's work in The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. Though tonally quite a bit more dour, the Greek Myths followup starring Michael Gambon is also worth a watch.

5. Tolkien Radio Dramas

From the scratchy, otherworldly quality of the 1968 Hobbit radio play to 1981's magnificently realised LOTR (and Tales From The Perilous Realm featuring Alfred Molina and BRIAN BLESSED), these are my favourite Tolkien adaptations, surpassing even the original film trilogy.

4. Age of Mythology

My first RTS game AND my first PC game, and it captured my imagination like no other. I would plug into this world of gods, monsters and heroes for hours on end. I even learned how to touch type by memorising all the cheat codes!

3. Bone

Jeff Smith's cartoon saga thrusts its trio of Sunday newspaper strip escapees into a high fantasy epic, beautifully threading the line between sequential comedic hijinks and Tolkienian drama.

2. The Wolves of St August

Hellboy is my favourite comics character bar none, and there are so many stories I could gush about, but Wolves of St August is a standout piece in Mike Mignola's gothic pulp mythos - a perfect ghost yarn, a werewolf story equal parts tragic and terrifying.

1. The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents

Consider this my blanket post for Discworld as a whole. Pratchett's books were instrumental in shaping my worldview as a teen, but Maurice was my introduction to that world and the funniest, darkest thing I'd ever read at 11 years old.

I recently read a book compiling Greek vampire fiction from the late 19th/early 20th century

Bearing in mind the Greek vampire (vrykolakas) is a loosely defined creature appearing as a revenant, ghoul or vengeful spirit, the common thread in these stories was one of religious or spiritual horror 🧵

Just finished reading the whole trilogy in a 9-day sprint! Any Gemmell readers kicking around here?

I've been keeping track of my reading for the S&S deep dive. This isn't looking too bad for roughly three months

In another life I would have really liked to gently hold you in my palm and read comics with you

Bet none of you can guess which book this is a translation of.

Greeks, keep quiet on this one.

This is a fun one - The Scythian (localised as The Last Warrior), a 2018 Russian historical fantasy.

The main duo, Lutobor and Marten, are like a hyperviolent Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser of the Eurasian steppe.

Scythian assassins, mutant berserkers and silly haircuts abound. Try to see it subbed.

Another find. I believe this is the translation used for the 1950 film with José Ferrer.
