My favorite TV channel in college was a locally owned low-power station that would just show random programming for most of its broadcast day. CFL football? Sure! A foreign language film after it? Why not!
streaming platforms have robbed us of the randomness that used to be both an essential property of tv watching and a quality that mitigated its addictiveness somewhat. we were wholly beholden to whatever happened to be on! if we didn’t like any of it we were obligated to go do something else!

I've been a NASCAR fan my whole life, even wrote columns about it twice a week when I worked in newspapers. I legitimately forgot there was a race Sunday until a buddy texted me and asked if I was watching.
