Regrettably the tabloids had begun showing up by the time I left in August '99. But their appearance, along with the billboard anecdote, really sensitized me to the affective consequences of not having to deal with this sort of 'glyphic overload'.

Also, La Paz had newspaper culture (and lots of those weirdo UFO/ancient civilization-type magazines that have always been everywhere – I remember these in Yugoslavia in the 80s) but no political tabloids that smeared people à la National Enquirer, etc.

I lived in La Paz, Bolivia for a few years in the late 90s and there were no billboards in the city at all (or maybe just one or two). Remember coming back to NYC and just having total culture shock for exactly that reason.
