March 29, 2023: Tlayuda post-script: While the food court is great it’s also geared to tourists (bilingual menus). In fact my favorite tlayuda place was in the Mercado Benito Juárez itself. La Torta Gigante serves market workers; the food is simple, no-frills, and you get a front-row seat. A+ 🍜

April 20, 2023: Finally settled on Chabelita as the queen of tlayudas at the mercado, which should’ve been obvious since it’s one of the most crowded spots. Absolutely perfect balance of flavors, and was lucky enough that the agua fresca del día was jamaica, which is Mexican for hibiscus. 🍜

April 17, 2023: I went through a number of the vendors at the Mercado 20. de Noviembre, sampling their tlayudas.

To ensure accuracy, I always got the ‘especial’, so I could sample each vendor’s choice of tasajo, cecina and chorizo. 🍜

April 15, 2023: Getting into some tlayuda action at Oaxaca’s Mercado 20. de Noviembre. 🍜

April 15, 2023: Time for tlayudas. This imposing tower of tortillas – crispy, when used for tlayudas – is how they stack ‘em at the Mercado 20 de Noviembre, which is the sort-of food court on the south side of the Mercado Benito Juárez. 🍜

11 April, 2023: A few more Oaxaca pics. Decided to follow up the aguachile at Humar with this absolutely lovely tostada de pulpo. No regrets. 🍜

11 April, 2023: Aguachile explorations continue, this time at Humar. Not as good as Taco Sireno but still a solid effort, which was made up for the fact that Humar was just a few steps from where I was staying, and has an absolutely lovely roof space.

Still at Taco Sirena, I was riding high from the aguachile and couldn’t resist getting a trio of fish tacos, Baja style. Blue corn tortillas were a definite plus.

8 April, 2023: Getting down with my first aguachile experience, here at Taco Sirena. If you’re a fan of a ceviche, aguachile is, like, the next level. While it’s traditionally from Sinaloa, Oaxaca does an absolutely bang-up job.

4 April, 2023: Oaxaca’s juice game is on point; pretty much any juice joint will get you the goods.

Here the green juice features nopal, and has a refreshing tinge of bitterness to it. The red juice is your standard orange-beet-carrot, but I definitely recommend subbing grapefruit for the orange.

4 April, 2023: Got my proper Oaxaca breakfast on at Chepiche Cafe. Although the food was somewhat ‘gringo’ the deployment of hoja santa in this dish was superb. Also A+ coffee.

29 March, 2023: The tlayuda especial at La Torta Gigante is the working man’s tlayuda. Made deep inside the Mercado Benito Juárez, it’s jammed with everything you need to keep you going for the day. I ate here 3-4 times because I dug how they were a part of the internal working of the market itself.

27 March, 2023: First night in Oaxaca and my first encounter with a tlayuda, here at Tlayudas El Negro. Many more tlayudas would enter my life in the following weeks but this one remains unique for its inclusion of chepiche herbs.

27 March, 2023: Last day in CDMX and before I dashed off to the airport I had to stop into Tierra Garat for one last hot chocolate. It’s a chain but the Chocolate Criollo is solid af.
May 15, 2023 at 5:01 AM
25 March, 2023: Another good thing about CDMX is, if you’re ever caught in a surprise thunderstorm, there’s almost always a taqueria within a few meters that will provide you shelter. And tacos. Here’s the al pastor fiver from La Torta Brava, just off the Zócalo.

17 March, 2023: Styles were absolutely peaking at Merotoro. If you’re in CDMX and want to splash out this is a great spot in which to do it. Sorry for the crappy pics but really no photography can do justice to how good this food is.

12 March, 2023: Stopped into a small shop in San Miguel de Chapultepec and picked up these two gems: Cara a Cara is probably my favorite mezcal from this trip, and making a spritz with this Uruguayan Pet-Nat was another way of saying ‘winning’.
