Liking G1 designs is valid. I love a lot of them. But it's very disappointing to me when new robot designs don't take into account personality, a key thing that distinguishes Transformers from a lot of mecha. You can get so much character out of a character when it's full of character to begin with!

This is generally what I'm referring to when I say I don't find the G1 cartoon designs very characterful. They aren't bad robot designs (mostly), but the designers weren't generally trying to evoke character, they were trying to translate a disparate assortment of Japanese toys for animation.

I think a key thing about Animated that tends to be overlooked is the purpose of the unusual proportions. They weren't just cartoony for the sake of it. Their silhouette tells you about their personality before you even see them speak. "Friend-shaped" isn't just a joke, it's literally a thing.
