Election worker in the Commonwealth of Virginia, where we are always gearing up for an election, running one or wrapping one up.
Unfortunately, the top result in google searches is the Statista site, which uses that Census # of 168M, so it's understandable how people wrongly think it's "the" number. While the Census provides disclaimers on their site clarifying the context, Statista doesn' show the disclaimer on their site.

Registration numbers are reported by each state. The EAC compiles them in one place for Congress every 2 years. 209M is THE number for 2020.
That 168M is extrapolated from a Census survey of 60K households. It's used for demographics & trending, it's not election data.

Thanks for the update. Disappointing but not surprising.

And this one can't even try to pretend he didn't see the "Area Closed" signs.

I am still absorbing the fact that every state shifted red. Every state.

Thanks for the update. Glad to know it's done.

Deb, your overall point is valid but it can be more compelling with correct registered voter info. There were 209M registered voters in 2020, not 168M.

The bi-annual EAC reports to Congress are definitive sources of election data. Link to reports from 2004-2022:

Thanks for getting back to me. You are likely aware of Cook's National Popular Vote Tracker but posting the link here for convenience. As of today's report, 155M votes have been tallied for the 2024 Presidential race, compared to 158M in 2020.

Did you attach the right link, Deb? The article you provided is discussing the overall turnout rate of the eligible voting-age population. I don't see where it addresses your comment about, "15M dems who stayed home?"

Where is @debfranchois.bsky.social coming up with her 15M number??
November 30, 2024 at 4:15 PM
Not sure where you are coming up with 15M, but here are the total counts, per Cook Political, right now. Remember, votes are still being tallied across the country.

John, at the risk of being pedantic, I believe you meant 89M of the voting-eligible population didn't vote.

The U.S. has ~265M people of voting age, of whom ~245M are "eligible" to vote, of whom ~210M took the steps to register to vote.

Thanks for the heads up. That account recently followed me and I have now blocked. What a waste of a great username.

You are certainly free to use wrong numbers to make your point. Using the correct numbers will strengthen your position, though, not weaken it.
November 21, 2024 at 6:58 PM
Shawn, ~245M is the number of Americans who are ELIGIBLE to vote, not registered. Not all who are eligible take the necessary steps necessary to actually register to vote.

In 2020, there were 209M registered voters. In 2024, it's a bit more. You might want to connect with @sdonelan.bsky.social.
