Currently in the eye of the cooking storm, so I thought I'd come back to this, because some of the responses from economists amount to what I suggest calling "sensewashing," by analogy with the sanewashing so many in the media have consistently offered Trump 1/
People have been puzzling over Scott Bessent's claim that tariffs can't be inflationary — which is, by the way, completely different from Trump's claim that foreigners will pay. The thing is, there is a kind of model here — one that is clear, consistent, and totally false 1/

Very much this, from Dan Drezner. He focuses a lot on universities, but rightly so. U.S. educational, scientific and technological preeminence are closely linked — and all have a lot to do with the past openness of our society 1/ open.substack.com/pub/danieldr...

Very little of what Trump does these days amazes me.

Any one of the last three of Trump’s Cabinet-level picks (Gabbard as DNI, Gaetz as AG, RFK for HHS), standing alone, would arguably have been the worst in American history.

As I keep saying: this should be a five-alarm fire for anyone who says they care about inflation. Putting the money supply in hands of politicians has not ended well in Venezuela, Argentina, Turkey, etc

Gonna try another old-Twitter-style thread, since the last one got a lot of engagement. This time about a topic some people have raised, but needs more attention: the likelihood that Trump's tariffs will become an engine of immense corruption 1/

As I said, the long term goal of Trump and the Republicans is to delegitimize and dismantle the Federal Government.

That’s why he wants to appoint a man who is under investigation for sex trafficking to head up the Justice Department.
John Bresnahan reports that GOP senators are stunned—and not in a good way—by Trump's nomination of Matt Gaetz for AG.

Chuck Grassley was so exasperated by reporters asking him about Gaetz that he stopped talking and stood there stone-faced for 30 seconds.
