I am baffled as to why people think 'operational definitions' bring clarity to scientific concepts. Conflating the (presumed) evidence for the effects of something unobservable with the thing itself does not *clarify* anything. It is *muddling*, collapsing the distinction between theory and evidence

The attack on Trump is erasing news of Israel’s bombing of the al-Mawasi refugee camp, located in a designated “safe zone, killing at least 90 and wounding 300. Most of the casualties were women or children.

An atrocity.

Israel targets Hamas commander in airstrikes that kill 90 Palestinians
The powerful Israeli strike was directed at the head of the Hamas military wing, Mohammed Deif. But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged he didn't have definitive information on Deif's fate.

They need to find a way to make clean energy a brutally exploitative enterprise that consumes human lives and mostly just benefits a small handful of millionaire investors. Then conservatives can get behind it.

After dealing with Crohn's disease for almost 20 years now, I finally had surgery to get the bit of intestine that's been bothering me all this time removed. I'm feeling pretty great now! I hope this is the last of my health problems for a while.

How to hit the research program jackpot in three simple steps:

1. Be critical so you offend everyone enjoying the status quo
2. Be interdisciplinary so no one thinks your work is relevant or good enough by their field's standards
3. Be theoretical to annoy as many empiricists as possible

Voilà!

This crisis has produced the clearest possible fault lines: students and faculty (the authentic university) on one side, administration and finance capital (with an assist from the security state) on the other.

A reminder that every argument about regulation is an argument over who will pay for shareholder profits
DeSantis has signed a law blocking local governments from enacting heat protections for outdoor workers—including the farmworkers that feed him and his family.

“Two million people in Florida, from construction to agriculture, work outside in often humid, blazing heat.”

Florida blocks heat protections for workers right before summer
Miami-Dade County had proposed rules that would give workers breaks, water, and shade when it's too hot. But a new state law prevents cities and counties from doing that.

CONCLUSION:
AI-as-engineering has been trespassing into cogsci, confusing us with decoys. The time is apt to reclaim the early conception of AI-as-theoretical-psychology. This means using AI as a theoretical tool; but we want to not fall in the trap of makeism again. 17/n

you see, in the late 80s, a young tourist visited the priest's unorthodox church, which was hosting a youth congregation at the time. the tourist asked him what music was playing, and he replied 'My Bloody Valentine. you like it? it's yours' and handed him the record. that tourist was Billy Corgan

🧵 I'll talk up a recent paper I loved working on. We show why meaningful replications need to be based on deeper theoretical understanding & stronger empirical foundations. It's a theory paper like our other metascientific work.

The great snare of the psychologist is the confusion of his own standpoint with that of the mental fact about which he is making his report. I shall hereafter call this the ‘psychologist's fallacy’ par excellence. - William James
