and (as I am sure you realise) capital owners are not homogenous and some capitalists (including start-ups and their financiers) have always done things that hurt other capitalists

(argh! I realise that Timpson's can replace i.e. Church's soles, what I meant was, I'd like a low-cost brand to develop something replaceable)

people really need to update their views on the Telegraph

yeah, much as I love Vimes, a scatter plot with price on one axis and durable on the other would be a cloud

(tho I wish some enterprising firm would launch a range of shoes the selling point of which would be replaceable soles)

I am trying to learn portrait painting and that photo really drives home how being 0.5mm out here and there make the difference between a human face and a gargoyle

the word "downplaying" was mine not Nancy's, and she is still undecided about whether the WB was right to stress fundamentals (government capacities, macro stability, openness to trade etc.) and avoid giving the impression that activist IP is generally a good idea

a very minor aside: I wonder if the whole controversy about whether it was factor accumulation or TFP growth goes away, once you allow for capital-embodied technological change

I was thinking about e.g. smelters going solar/electric and those that are not. If there is a fuel price spike, the former will be able to out compete and perhaps acquire the fossil dependent ones. China's competitive position will improve as fossil prices rise - what will it do about that?

It gives very different incentives when it comes to "start wars that will result in higher fuel prices" (well, to the extent the USA need to import fuels, anyway).

Which is why I think "we are not swivel eyed loons" isn't entirely a dead end!

I wonder why the helmet manufacturer didn't start by offering its products to retailers on a sale-or-return basis, as I believe is commonplace elsewhere

(at the same time, whilst I think you make some excellent points Chris, still I reckon there is a large an important difference between competent and incompetent ministers, and selecting for competence is desirable - I think you are underplaying importance and existence of competence)

there is nothing the British hate more than a rich person with left wing views - we want our rich people to grind our faces in the dirt, goddamn it

this is not an original observation (you make it here) but I increasingly think the dynamic that if you claim to be moral, every moral slip is a newsworthy outrage, whereas for well-known swine every sin is met with a shrug (at an extreme with MAGA v Dems) is responsible for everything going to hell

I have no idea!

my point was merely that heterodox economics is as insular as the mainstream
