Hayao Miyazaki, who said AI is an "insult to life itself," would probably hate all the AI-generated art ripping his studio's style that people in the AI industry are now obsessed with www.404media.co/hayao-miyaza...
Hayao Miyazaki, Who Said AI Is ‘Insult to Life Itself,” Reduced to AI-Generated Meme by OpenAI
The internet is flooded with AI-generated images in the style of Studio Ghibli, whose founder said “I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all.”

Never was too sure I’d see my social security payout, but I figured it’d be because boomers used it all up, not because Elon Musk hamburglared it

An easy solution for this concern: get rid of gendered sports. All coed, with leagues split by some basic ability metrics. Metric-based splits work for boxing, there’s no reason they shouldn’t for integrating genders. Unless, of course, fairness isn’t really the root of the concern.
Kavanaugh also asks about the effects of this case on "women's and girl's sports," fretting that a decision letting transgender athletes play on women's teams would raise "competitive fairness and safety issues that have been vocally raised by some female athletes."

He is def upholding this ban.

Stuff like this always reminds me of Peter Cullen’s talk about the idea that led him to the voice for Optimus Prime: “Be strong enough to be gentle.” Sure it’s for a cartoon character, but the idea that compassion takes more strength than cruelty does is a resonant truth in any form.
"How do you make ‘strong’ men? According to the right, it’s by making them cruel. “Owning the libs” isn’t just entertainment and sport, it’s important psychological training for the civil war they believe is to come."

The meaning crisis, and how we rescue young men from reactionary politics
In the recent US election, male voters overwhelmingly voted for Trump – because he offered them the illusion of meaning in a world where their position is uncertain

Disgust at SJSU’s transphobia aside, if play stats were really what transphobes were concerned about, the sensible thing to advocate for would be getting rid of gender in sports entirely. All coed, leagues separated by performance metrics. Very telling that that isn’t on the transphobe agenda.
The NYT quotes SJSU’s assistant coach saying that the trans woman on the team jumps higher & hits harder than the cis women she plays against—but doesn’t check to see if that’s true (it’s not—the screenshot on the right is ESPN’s reporting from earlier this week disproving those claims.

Why would the LLM recommend the things it does? Articles like this push folks to accept the black-box text creator’s outputs uncritically as objective truth, when they absolutely shouldn’t. If anything, you should trust LLMs less because you don’t know how the outputs were arrived at.

Coaching MS volleyball, I first told my girls to get 3 touches before attacking. Fundamental, best practice for control. But to turn a game around, we realized it was better to just send the ball over. One touch was fine. Make your opponent have to not mess up, especially if odds are that they will!
I have a sports metaphor story for this!

I have a younger brother who was a very competitive baseball player as a kid. Was on all the local travel & developmental squads.

One of his coaches had a very interesting and counterintuitive (to me) philosophy of the game, as it was played at that level.
This does not mean “don’t worry about it,” or even that “it’s just a distraction.”

It means fight, delay, push back, express doubt, and do anything you can to remind anyone who’ll listen that Trump and Trumpers threaten all sorts of things and hope you’ll jump out of the way.

Don’t forfeit.

In middle school teacher training, the number one tactic for dealing with disruptive kids is to not give energy to negative behavior and only give it to positive behavior. That’s a big part of why Bluesky blocking is so effective at combating these RW trolls & “intellectuals,” and why they hate it

geriatric millennials will be like “I know a banger album” and it’s just Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
geriatric millennials will be like "i know a banger album" and it's just Blood Sugar Sex Magik

(And we're absolutely right)
geriatric millennials will be like "i know a banger album" but it's just "jagged little pill (acoustic)"
