Clearly it underwent episodes of growth and decay as it transited the far side, while blasting big CMEs.
It was losing area as it approached W limb (700 MSH),but note the surge of flux&area in leader part of AR just before it rotates across limb.
Interestingly it was also large when it approached the W limb the first time, as AR 4246 (840 MSH).
