An emotional throughline. Fiction is meant to take the reader on a journey of emotion. As such it must not lose track of what it want the reader to feel at the end of it and how it plans to get there.

I really ... don't know. My first impulse was logic. If the story doesn't make sense, is it even a story and not just a bunch of words strung together?

I just love the way he's changing from a self-absorped teen to a true leader of his folk. And he's not even the one telling the story, with some very short exceptions.
