Extending Women’s Healthspan Through the Menopause Transition | 👩🏻‍🔬Scientist-led sharing insights on female longevity research
Pinned
Male mice are the default in aging research.

Female mice are still less chosen, despite confirmed sex differences in how drugs impact our bodies.

Menopause? Considered in <1% of preclinical aging studies.

Ovallia is here to close the gap. #LongevityGap #WomensHealth
The most commonly used lab mouse doesn’t menstruate.

Yet, it’s still used in female biology research.

Do we even have a relevant model for women’s biology?

Sex-specific biology in aging!

OT + ALK5 inhibitor extended lifespan by 73% in frail 25-mo male mice and improved their healthspan.

In females, mid-life treatment improved fertility but in older frail females it didn't extend lifespan or healthspan.

👉 Testing both sexes is essential

The FDA has approved elinzanetant, a new drug for menopausal hot flashes and night sweats that may also help with menopause-related sleep problems. Significant news for patients who can't take estrogen; nonhormonal treatments have been very limited.

❌Myth: Menopause only affects fertility.
🟢Fact: It also impacts bones, heart, brain, and overall healthspan.

Female mice in studies ≠ menopause research. We still lack biomarkers and natural models to study the transition that shapes female longevity!

Menopause is not just an end to fertility.

It is the sharpest transition in human aging which drives systemic changes with lifelong consequences.

It remains underexplored, with significant unknowns and therapies focused on symptoms rather than prevention.

Let’s change that. #FemaleLongevity
