2024 was also a record for the amount of water vapour in the atmosphere. Water vapour is a powerful greenhouse gas and a warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture, amplifying the CO₂ induced warming.

The increased levels of water in the atmosphere mean that heavy rainfall events become more severe.

The data is in. 2024 was the warmest year on record, and probably in the whole of human history – about 1.6°C warmer than the pre-industrial period.

More than 1 billion individual thermometer measurements, made by thousands of people over many decades, have been condensed into a single number.

Which 20 year period will be first to be >1.5°C on average?

2016-2035? Mean of 2025-2035 would need to be 1.69°C

2019-2038? Mean of 2025-2038 would need to be 1.59°C

2023-2042? Mean of 2025-2042 would need to be 1.51°C

(Using HadCRUT5. Using ERA5 the values would be slightly lower.)

What will the future of the warming stripes be?

2024 could be the start of a stabilisation of global temperatures, or it might appear to be a cool year.

Which one of these stories becomes reality depends on our choices today, and every day until then.

We are likely to regret not acting sooner.

A disaster is a function of three things: the hazard itself, people's vulnerability to the hazard, and their exposure. @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social explains eloquently how the LA fires are a perfect storm of all three. Read more:
