Abolish the Monarchy, give the vote to the people

Our Republic’s Treasurer, Tristan and Media & Comms Officer, Kiran, have co-written a piece in The National calling for a fairer, more democratic Scotland, one where no one is born to rule, and everyone is equal.

Will Lloyd’s New Statesman essay doesn’t just criticise Prince Andrew, it exposes the system that shields him.

The monarchy has learned how to protect its own interests, not ours.

True democracy means no inherited privilege, no secrecy, and no one above the law.

Unelected power is dangerous.

When leadership is inherited rather than earned, it puts society, justice, and democracy at risk. Power without accountability protects privilege, not people.

It’s time to end unaccountable authority and build a fairer system where power serves the people.

Prince Andrew has agreed not to use his titles, including Earl of Inverness.
Inverness may be symbolically free, but the monarchy still holds all the power.
If Inverness can lose a prince, Scotland can lose the monarchy.

Can Scotland ever be truly independent with the British King as Head of State?
Real democracy means power from the people, not inheritance.
It’s time to build a Scotland where no one is above the people or the law.

We’ve been sold myths about the monarchy for generations.
But behind the pageantry lies a system of privilege, inequality, and unaccountable power.
It’s time to ask: do we really want this to represent Scotland?

Our Republic is featured in The National: The majority of Scots say it’s time to abolish the monarchy. Scotland deserves democracy, not privilege, an elected head of state, not a king we never chose.

Epstein’s crimes are bound to exploitation and unaccountable power. Yet those with royal titles or unelected positions at the top of politics continue to move in the most influential circles without ever facing scrutiny or accountability.

This isn’t just about scandal. It’s about a system.
September 14, 2025 at 6:08 PM
Three years of scandal, privilege & hollow gestures. From 'cash for honours' to hidden billions, the monarchy isn’t fit for a modern democracy. As our convener Cameron Archibald writes in The National: it’s not if it ends in Scotland, but when. Full piece: www.thenational.scot/politics/254...

Power must always be accountable. It’s time for Scotland to have a Head of State chosen by the people, not by birthright.

Charles the great diplomat pulling a Neville Chamberlain

Offering this wannabe absolute Monarch an unprecedented second State visit is an embarrassment.

It makes our Government look weak, bowing and scraping to a man with utter contempt for democracy and our values.
February 28, 2025 at 7:46 PM
Scotland didn't vote for any of this.

But one will be hoisted upon us as our Head of State regardless, complete with dodgy deals to carve out personal exemptions to our laws as he sees fit.
December 8, 2024 at 1:13 AM
Yet again we face the embarrassing spectacle of a Government having an unelected, unaccountable Monarch sat in a golden throne, coated in jewels, announcing their legislative ambitions.

Making a mockery of the line "...principles of security, fairness and opportunity for all..."

Now more than ever Scotland needs MPs that will stand up for democratic reform. At this #GeneralElection2024 you have the opportunity to do just that. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Look forward to us asking Scottish General Election candidates whether they agree with the Scottish people - that more prefer an elected head of state to a Monarchy.

Time for some democracy! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿✊

Yet again Charles, who cloaks himself as an environmentalist, has displayed his contempt for the law, democracy, and the environment he claims to care about so much
