I know it sounds counterintuitive, but just letting my palette be a mess has been so helpful in mixing nice looking colors, lol.
A plastic palette with watercolor wells. It has all sorts of filthy paint mixtures of varying shades strewn about, within the mixing areas, and atop the ridges.
