If you spend time in a Jeffersonian grid like rural New York you encounter these a lot in Grid Corrections where crossroads get split into two three-way intersections. It’s a compromise to fit a 2-D grid onto a curved sphere. Photo from Gerco de Ruijter’s 2015 project “The Seduction of the Grid”
