Yesterday was 67 years of integrated public schools in Norfolk. The building this picture was taken in is still in use for a few more years.
Louis Cousins one of the Norfolk 17 at Maury High School on February 2nd 1959. Louis was one of 17 African American students who enrolled in all white schools in Norfolk Virginia. In this Photo he is in very front row waiting for his home room assignment. Only one white student is visible within two rows of him. The next closest are maybe 7 rows back and that’s only like 4 people. There’s maybe 20-40 people 10 or more rows back. Louis is a young African American man in an overcoat and glasses. The picture is in black and white and from the Virginian-Pilot the paper of record in Hampton Roads
