I think your problem may be the term "designer tea cups". For my grandmother's & mother's generations it was "fine china" or "fine bone china" most of it "made in England". They had cabinets of tea sets (fancy teapots, jug, sugar bowl) & individual cups & saucers, also full dinnerware sets.

Like MILKMAN, Molloy's novel is written in stream of consciousness but with Derry dialect. 3 Irish writers have used Joyce's literary technique to the greatest effect: Molloy & Burns, both dealing with The Troubles & Eimear McBride, A GIRL IS A HALF-FORMED THING, with child abuse. 🌟

Abuse scenes always trigger me regardless of whether they're essential to the story but it also depends on how well handled. Suffering of the kind you see in #TheDouble is key to the revenge & justice narrative. #DearX revels in suffering & abuse for vicarious thrill. A form of porn imo.

The scenes with the kids - terrific actors, but still - upset me not only for trigger reasons but concern about the children acting out this stuff. Aside from parents allowing it, I wonder about child protection laws in Korea.

Yes it's very popular apparently which confirms for me there's something very wrong with humanity. I think people are numb to suffering if they can watch it for entertainment. But do have a look yourself. You'll know by Ep 3 what I'm talking about as it's unrelenting.

I respect the horror genre - vampires, werewolves, ghosts & psychological horror like The Sixth Sense & The Others, but abuse stories for no other purpose than vicarious thrill sicken me. Wondering also about the harmful effects on the child actors. Surprised it's legal.

And I just realised it wasn't Monk Gibbon but Mervyn Wall (who spoke about him a lot) the author of the wonderfully funny books about the "Unfortunate Fursey" (a monk) and the seminal Leaves for the Burning (1952) about his generation.

A good lag in the colonies lol. Once met Monk Gibbon "the Grand Old Man of Irish Letters" at a writer's retreat. When I said I was from Canada, he said, "ah, there's a writer from Australia here". My fellow colonist Gerard Windsor & I had a good chuckle later.

Had to google. 🙏 This is what I used to love on Twitter (before it became the Muskrat's sewer) finding people like you & the others I follow, who send me off on interesting tangents. I use Nennius's description of himself "a garrulous bird" for myself, i.e. a magpie. Also a noisy collector.

If I remember rightly it was the wandering hermit who wore nothing except a cloth around his loins. I couldn't figure out the reference or image. If it were lions ... might've worked ... sort of.

So you didn't ask anyone? Smart kid.

I can still recite a lot of poetry as well as Shakespearean speeches, from my Canadian education. My Mum & Dad could quote even more, from the Irish system. I do think it's a loss to education in the West but I'm old fashioned that way.

I LOVE A Canticle For Leibowitz. A reread. Just recommended it recently to someone interested in illuminated manuscripts. First read it as a kid (library find) but came across "loins" & asked my mother what it meant. She took the book off me. Knew never to ask her again about words lol.

He showed us a college entrance exam with ancient poetry on it (they still memorise poetry in primary & secondary schools as we did in olden days of the West when I was a kid). I'm translating Cdrama lyrics, will have a go at poetry next. Fave way to learn a language besides visiting the country.

... The class #Cdrama addict. "I'll watch out for it," I promised. We all laughed. (The advantage of small class. Great fun.) Here's the expression in pinyin (macrons above both i): rì yuè sheng hui [macrons on e & i]. Need to find way to do macrons! AI advice useless.
