Nobody seems to mention that O'Donovan was the Minister of State for Public Procurement during this time? Even aside from this, he's not asked anything about that time or what he changed.

The spending of €120,000 on a scanner that has never been used is likely to be examined by the review of how the Department of Arts and Culture supervises the institutions under its remit recently announced by the Minister, Patrick O’Donovan, Government sources say. Mr O’Donovan was due to brief the Cabinet on the issue on Tuesday when he brings the annual report of the National Gallery to the Cabinet for approval. RTÉ reported this morning that the X-ray scanner, purchased by the Gallery eight years ago, has never been used because a suitable room for it has not been found. On his way into Cabinet this morning Tánaiste Simon Harris said that his reaction was “absolute fury” when he heard about the issue. The total cost of the controversial new Dáil printer which did not fit into its designated room will be more than €2 million, it has now emerged. The clerk of the Dáil, Peter Finnegan, has submitted a new report to the Dáil’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) outlining additional costs to those already outlined in previous correspondence. The new figures show the cost is higher than the €1.6 million outlined by the Oireachtas a number of weeks ago.

It would be great if Irish news media asked the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media to look at wasted money in sports as well as in the arts, he could cover the cost of 166 printers for the National Gallery out of the spend on dog tracks.
Meanwhile, new attendance figures for Ireland’s 14 greyhound tracks in 2024 show Youghal stadium, which was saved from closure via a last-minute bailout in 2023, had just two paying customers for the entire year. In statistics released to People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy, GRI said Youghal had 8,840 attendees over the course of its 131 meets in 2024, an average of 67 people in attendance per night. However, some 8,622 of those in attendance were owners and trainers, while 216 of them were bookmakers. The track recorded just two old age pensioners as paying attendees for the entirety of 2024.

Here's where the journalists' and headline writers' decision to say it was a €120k "scanner" comes to the surface. Making you think of printers and other home peripherals. It is an *XRAY* scanner! Hugely specialised and valid. Insane they don't have one up and running already.
