I think this is a consequence of a selective "an ideology does whatever people arbitrarily vaguely associated with it do" way of thinking, as evidenced in some comments.

Good example! Jihadists claim to act in the name of Islam, so by the similar reasoning, one could falsely equate them with Islam (mis)and use that false equivalence to argue against it.
I personally know some people who often make such fallacies, it is hard to talk with them about some topics. :/

I think what you actually hate, and rightfully so, is totalitarianism, not communism (as defined by e.g. Marxists).
Totalitarism just (not "just", but I am bad with words) happened to be perpetuated by people who called themselves communists, so you keep calling these instances "communism".

Reasoning similarly, one could conclude e.g. NK is a democracy because it has "Democratic" in its official name.
Also, there is a bit of circularity: with "what every communist regime was" you have already set the definition in advance and use it to argue using that same definition of "communism".

My place was also a part of a country (Yugoslavia) ruled by a communist party (what you call "under communism"). Part of the older generation that avoided nationalist brainwashing usually speaks neutrally or positively about it. Most of the negative things were also present in other countries.
