I've just written my first letter to the NYT Editor, in response to Jeremy Peters' anti-trans article.

It feels unlikely it will be published, so I'm posting it here so it's not lost.
Re: Jeremy Peters' article regarding the tone of the trans rights movement published Nov 27. The article downplays the grave reality: Trans people have come under a sustained, systematic attack fueled by millions of dollars of political ads falsely portraying them as a societal threat. In truth, this tiny, vulnerable population experiences violent crime four times the rate of cis people. Their clinics have been firebombed and schools supporting trans students face bomb threats. A constant stream of legislation targets their ability to fully participate in public life. In contrast, Peters identifies the threat to those debating trans rights as having "to endure their unsparing criticism", and asks us to consider the impact on billionaire JK Rowling of having her feminist credentials questioned. Trans peoples' fight for protections from discrimination and access to healthcare is urgent and just. The hurt feelings of their critics should not overshadow the existential threats trans people endure every day.
