Imperial College London @imperialcollegeldn.bsky.social ranks first in the UK and Europe in the 2026 QS World University Rankings @qscorporate.bsky.social. This puts us in a unique position to challenge the dominance of the traditional rankers.

Read my op-ed for Imperial's student newspaper, Felix.
It’s time to challenge the flawed and damaging university rankings
In the 2026 QS World University Rankings, Imperial came first in the UK and Europe and second globally. The university called the result “a powerful endorsement of the talent, dedication and ambition”...

You have to start somewhere, but this is an odd place to start. It's as if Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman in 'Independence Day' saw the aliens blow up NYC and LA, and then sat among the ruins telling each other: "Gosh, there's a lot of rubble about, isn't there? Careful where you step!"
Science advances our economic, physical, and social and cultural wellbeing, and is key to a sustainable future. However, we live in times of great change, and the values that have driven science for the benefit of humanity are under threat. Read our statement here: royalsociety.org/news/2025/02...

Hence the scenes in Popeye cartoons, in which he chugs a whole tin of spinach before speeding off to rescue Olive Oyl from Bluto.

As we move away from the Journal Impact Factor, tools like @altmetric.com show how much attention research gets in news, social media and policy docs. We subscribe to Altmetric at @imperialcollegeldn.bsky.social Library. We encourage researchers to use it to learn about the visibility of their work.
I've co-authored a short post with @openscihamid.bsky.social about Imperial research outputs cited on @bsky.app.

By using @altmetric.com, we found a massive uptick in mentions of Imperial publications on Bluesky from mid-November 2024.

Finally X'iting the sinking ship across the water.

I chose Bluesky instead of Mastodon or Threads because the research world seems to be coalescing here.

I got up to 300 followers on X. Hope to clear that by 2030, which would be a record-breaking rate of increase in my influence...
