I get that it played out that way, but the first exchange was "should I finish" and "be thankful you have the option". Then I got accused of attacking her. Sometimes people disagree with others or explain their positions, and that's not the same as a personal attack.

Yeah, that actually was helpful. I was told that sub-tweeting was an asshole thing to do, bc that's what I interpret this to be, but OK.
The thread ownership isn't intuitive. In my mind, once a convo is started nobody owns it. I'd detach this from the main thread but I don't know how.

Huh? I was asking about social etiquette, since I just started using it a year ago. People say, "then make your post", but that's the definition of sub tweeting, right?

It's a conversation. If you don't want to continue a convo, you just leave, right? I just assume that you want to continue if you're still replying.

Unfortunately not. Every person walked out of the room, like "How the f did he pass?!?" Even ppl in totally different fields.
The PI was a bully and didn't want to be embarrassed by having a student fail. That's why the trans student was bullied out instead of being allowed to defend.

I was in the room when that student presented. They couldn't answer a single question their committee asked and still passed. Meanwhile, minority students were pushed out.
That's not perpetuating abuse and is not about OP. It's calling out inequality and discrimination that is endemic in academia.

So, yeah, I'm a *little* disgruntled about that. And we should be glad we're still fighting.

The people I knew who weren't allowed even the chance of finishing were 100% more qualified than people who couldn't even explain they chose the experiments they did at their defense.

I've seen people graduate who were hand-held, did mediocre work, or others who never finished due to lack of interest or were making bank. They were in the same lab as students pushed out for their orientation or disability.
