This happens in software, too! A common issue will be a build framework or test automation framework will stop supporting certain OS or configuration options, so everyone stops testing or supporting those platforms

It’s easy to assume all software is buggy and poor quality because of corporate greed and cost cutting. But it turns out there are quite a few reasons why these bugs and user-hated features keep appearing everywhere. They take for a fun deep-dive, at least for me as a former software engineer

I thought about creating a weekly blog called “Enshitification Explained” after encountering a feature with zero (literally zero) customer demand. The feature didn’t make it out of beta testing after furious customer feedback, but it would have boosted the KPIs tracked by the engineering team. 🤦♂️😤

My research lab once wrote an AI based solution to a customer problem. We asked to do it without AI (the optimal solution could be found deterministically), and they refused.
“We can’t sell this to our own customers if it’s not AI.”

Look, this is a company with a $1.4 Trillion market cap. A trillion dollar pay package is a very reasonable price to offer somebody for running the company into the ground. While also managing five other companies and a volunteer job in the government. 🤷♂️

Oh thank god, I thought it was just me 😂 I had to ask a curious customer to come back in five minutes for a quick tutorial when he asked to watch me reverse some malware and every command syntax just left my brain 🦖

I mean…I will cheerfully retire before I do full time malware RE work again. There’s a form of malware data analysis and light reversing I’ll happily do, given the chance and the tools. But some jobs are hard to fill because the effort doesn’t match the reward except for those with a special passion

Same. I love this stuff but there’s plenty of other enjoyable paths out there. My next job will be database admin or developer at this point…even with 20 years in security, hiring managers don’t call back anymore. 🤷♂️
