Taken a few weeks ago, now all snow-covered. At 2200m, Nia wondering where the freshly hibernating Marmots have gone.

I was taking a short video of Nia playing fetch, to send to my cousins, when she came up with a new one to add to her impressive repertoire. Back ‘atcha!

Local IPA, to wash down a venison stew and all the traditional trimmings after a long walk in the mountains.

Hold my beer…

Nia made a new doggie yesterday, they clicked like old friends and had a fun-to-watch play session. Note Nia’s world class feint and the Australian Shepherd / Berger des Alpes mix’s right hook response. Poetry in motion, as if choreographed. Taigo and Bella look on.

Besides the local majority Herens race of cows, we also have some hybrid Dairy / Meat cows breeds that are now being taken down from their summer Alpine grazing meadows. These two are enjoying the last few weeks of fresh grass before a winter indoors eating hay and silage. The flies swarmed me.

Excellent recipe, I use one very similar, honey to glaze when finishing. I slice rather than pull the pork, as you have to overcook the meat to be pull-able (IMO). Grilling high over charcoal if possible, or run in a very hot smoker over charcoal only, as below, under a broiler if not possible.

One last try by but Zeus is probably in too much pain or discomfort to keep playing, poor thing.
September 17, 2025 at 10:53 AM
Nia has a first play date with Zeus. After many short meetups in the street, we finally got an opportunity to take them to a spot they can have a runaround. Zeus is also 6 years old, and suffers from arthritis of the shoulder, so they just had a bit of a run and a sniff or two.

Nia and her daily treat, a beef pizzle. 6 years old and perfectly white teeth, pleasant breath. She usually gets a pig’s ear as well.

Hard choices - Raspberries or squirrel?

It’s tennis ball season.
August 10, 2025 at 4:14 PM
I don’t buy balls for Nia, she finds them herself. This one squeaks a bit, and collapses when chewed, a double whammy plastic sphere that contains a whole world of canine joy and pleasure.

Wild strawberries!

Headed up the mountain early this morning to beat the heat. We are following the Bisse, the waterways built hundreds of years ago to bring water down from the glaciers to irrigate crops in the valley many kilometers below. The harsh call is because she’s scenting the deer below, tempted to bolt.

Taking care of Nia’s boyfriend for a few days, last cool off after a long walk in the heat of the late morning. They are so alike, no wonder they are crazy about each other.

With apologies to The Beagles.

Nia’s BF Balu is visiting for a week, they are both rescues and similar in temperament. Nia stays over at Balu’s when I’m away. She always gets very flirty with him, he mostly plays it cool but the love does not go unrequited; they often sleep back to back and bask in each others presence.

I love seeing that in the south of the UK, a bunch of road signs above the highways with the various numbers and destinations, and the one big one simply stating : The North.

Nia loves the water but isn’t crazy about swimming. Swimming to fetch balls is another matter entirely.

Nia, born in Spain, adopted at 1 ½ in Switzerland.

Nia’s working up a new routine for the Canine Games, her speciality is the Long Fetch but she’s set on a Rhythmic Gymnastic medal this year, Dog willing.
