Yes, they still have juries, which have form for making batshit crazy damages awards. Which are then largely eliminated on appeal. This show will run and run.

OTOH moving from the generic to the specific, the fact that a slew of judicial and quasi-judicial processes in the US have all reached the same conclusion as that advanced by Panorama ought to make it hard for him to argue that the accusation is untrue or unfair.

I’m more invested in Channel 4. The BBC’s “independence” was always baloney - he who pays the piper calls the tune, always - but C4’s unique status as a state owned broadcaster funded by normal commercial sources makes it more independent and, in its news output, it shows.

Time they de-platformed Farage. He’s been given enough attention for two lifetimes already.

I find it quite hard to relate Robbie to his brother Nick, who I knew as a colleague at KPMG - a basically decent individual, just took himself a bit seriously like most aspiring politicians.

They could offer a donation to a charity of his choice, and see if he can name one.

And given how the Fagash Führer has been so strident in accusing the BBC, perhaps they could respond by not inviting him on to Question Time or indeed any other current affairs programme any more? I think we’d all appreciate that.

Presumably the effect of a court action would be just that - the BBC’s defence would be to adduce all the evidence of what he actually said and did to show their portrayal was not materially false. This could be quite a show! And reporting (accurately) court proceedings is never defamatory.

Trump was closely associated with the Gambino family in NYC. He knows exactly how they conveyed what they *mean* in a way that leaves no room for misunderstanding, without using the explicit words. There was much comment on this over how he tried to suborn James Comey last time around.

It takes an obscene amount of hubris to lecture the BBC when you have The Telegraph’s record on truth-telling.

Some of the paper’s errors this year are so bad they’re almost laughable 👇🏻

Presumably though the tort would need to have been committed in Florida for their courts to accept jurisdiction? I suppose in the internet age, if the BBC posted the documentary on their website, that would be feasible.

I suspect that right now quite a few Democrats would not disagree!

It probably didn’t feel like it a decade or so ago, but Chris Patten now looks like a political giant among the field of pygmies (both Labour and Tory) now laid out before us, and slightly to the left of Keir Starmer.
