The whole idea that white Europeans would willingly and successfully adopt indigenous American culture runs counter to the entire concept of imperial colonialism.

Naw, dude, WE don't become THEM. THEY are made to become US.

It was literally preferable in some school districts to imply the Roanoke settlers all starved to death, were murdered, or sucked up by UFO tractor beams than to acknowledge a local tribe went "Dang, dude. You need a hand? Come sit by the fire. BTW I think my sister likes u."

Cuz yeah, part of it is willful miscommunication by career nonsense peddlers.

But another part was, the former Roanoke colonists intermarried and reproduced with the locals.

And y'can't have peaceable, interracial relationships in the textbooks, gang. Gotta sell those in Alabama, y'know.

He correctly states the fate of Roanoke was never REALLY a mystery, that even contemporary accounts provide evidence that the "lost" colonists moved to indigenous settlements and assimilated.

But he didn't get into why it's been sold as a spooky "disappearance" for decades.

And that's OFTEN not enough.

But it's something.

And that's also why the work doesn't end (and barely begins) with a vote or two.
