Motto Doremi's ending sequence is my favourite one so far. Beautiful visuals, emotional song and it tells a really nice little story!

But of course the compositing also has its valuable contribution to the show's aesthetic, mainly through the lighting which is coherent with the color palette. Combined with all the other stuff I mentioned above, this makes the beautiful and carefully constructed aesthetic of this show!

Highlights and irotore (colored lines) also make use of the show's main colors to support the aesthetic. This also avoids over reliance on the compositing to define the color of the scene, which is a common problem in modern anime.

If you look at the backgrounds, you can find "brushes" of the three main colors: blue, purple and yellow, even in t he interiors. This helps keep a tight aesthetic sense even in scenes that are not really dominated by a certain color. But if you look close enough you'll find them.

In episode 11, when a ghost torments Byakuya, green is used which is a color foreign to the show's palette and it properly conveys that something is off. When Mira comes over to help, the appartment is dyed in his blue color thus making Byakuya feel safe and being able to sleep.

There are neat uses of this color palette. For example with Formalhaut: his color is yellow, also a Byakuya color. Mira sees him initially as a danger to his relationship with Byakuya, but Formalhaut later shows that he supports them, thus dying the following scene of the pair with his yellow color.

Now that we found colors to the main characters, what I interpret from this is that the whole show's aesthetic is tightly built upon these colors, more specifically, Byakuya's. You see it in the other characters but also the backgrounds and the lighting, which makes for a cohesive aesthetic

The other magical girl, Hibana, is basically the opposite of Byakuya with her violent personality. Her dress is a dark blue/purple. She also has three colors, which are basically more intense variations of Byakuya's blue, purple and yellow.

Mira's color is very straightforward: an intense blue. His fire magic indicates it as well as other scenes focusing on him alone. In the very first scene of the series, he is attacking the city and his color dyes the city and Byakuya

Nevertheless I think we can easily find her color palette by looking at her magical girl transformation. Three colors stand out: very light versions of blue, purple and yellow. Putting one of those into an online color recognizer shows that they make a triad.

A good starting point is the protagonist Byakuya. To me her colors are "weak". Her white magical girl outfit supports her "emotionless" personality. After she meets Mira (the lieautenant), her life changes and she gets dyed in other colors

Katsute Mahou Shoujo to Aku wa Tekitai Shite Ita.

Color Design: Yukari Gotou

I really like the color design in this series and in this thread I'm going to try make sense out of it. Warning: I might be entirely off in my analysis but it should be fun.

And that's it! This might not be the most ambitious episode on an animation level but it easily is one of the best eps because the staff constructed a believable story which culminated in Ranma and Akane becoming closer. All of this heightened by the suprevision work of Nakajima!

Akane's honesty gets rewarded with this very sweet scene between her and Ranma. The reason he disappeared was to buy all of the presents she wanted (said at the start of the ep)! Gorgeous corrections from Nakajima, made me smile from ear to ear!

This leads to this scene with her romantic "rivals", where she tells them to stop with the nonsense because Ranma is spending Christmas with her. That plan was already decided, but the way she says it makes it impactful because she had never been so openly honest with her feelings so far.

One of the important scenes is the conversation between Akane and Mousse. Akane gives him encouraging words to not give up on Shampoo, his romantic interest. But you can tell she realizes that she could follow that advice herself. Good character moment from part of the anime!
December 24, 2024 at 9:55 PM
It also helps that the episode's animation is very loose and fun as you'd expect from an episode supervised by Atsuko Nakajima, the character designer! I also want to point out that at this point the designs have changed considerably compared to the beginning. This keeps the series refreshing!
December 24, 2024 at 9:55 PM
But after some time, Akane does get worried and goes out to look for Ranma. We then get a typical development for the series with Akane chasing after Ranma, encountering different characters and getting into all sorts of convoluted problems. Pretty fun time!
December 24, 2024 at 9:55 PM
Shampoo appears next, telling Akane with confidence that Ranma is going to spend Christmas with her. The important thing is that Akane is thinking of the family Christmas whereas Shampoo is thinking of the lovers Christmas (more of a thing in Japan). Akane just initially brushes it off.
December 24, 2024 at 9:55 PM
The episode starts with Ranma and Akane shopping for Christmas gifts. They interact casually as usual but the more important part here is that Akane tells Ranma everything she wants for Christmas. Right after, Ranma gets in trouble as usual and gets separated from Akane

The strength of this episode lies in its script and storyboarding, which make great use of almost the whole cast of characters to deliver a constantly entertaining episode that packs an emotional high at the end.

Ranma 1/2: Netto-hen #105
SB: Junji Nishimura
ED: Shinji Takagi
AD: Atsuko Nakajima

A fully anime-original christmas episode and it's one of the best of the whole series! To me this episode is one of the best examples of how well the animation staff understood the series and its characters -->

In the final scene, Lum comes back and even though Ataru kind of switches to his usual, rejective personality, his relief is extremely obvious. He's just a big tsundere for Lum, but now Lum also knows this and the two become closer as a result.
December 24, 2024 at 2:33 PM
Ataru finally breaks down and cries, begging Lum to comeback. Here is when we find out why Lum left (just had to renew her space passport lol) and that the doll has a microphone, which she can hear. She finally hears from Ataru himself that he cares deeply for her.
