𝘜𝘴𝘯𝘦𝘢 𝘨𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘢, also known as the Lustrous beard #lichen, is extremely rare in the Netherlands. As far as i know there are only 3 known spots. Luckily there is one close to my city in an area where i hike often. Always a joy to see it thrive!

I never knew they can be found in Japan as well. I found one two years ago in the Netherlands but from what i've read they are not native here, but originate from the mediterranean area. Is it native to Japan?

Heading home from work today, i noticed a little passenger on my bicycle: a planthopper (𝘐𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴). I hope he enjoyed the ride!

Gall wasps are interesting creatures. Their inducement for gall formation seems largely unknown, but could be chemical, mechanical, or viral. These wasps create wondrous structures for their larvae! Left: Rose bedeguar gall (𝘋𝘪𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘴 𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘢𝘦), right: Cottonwool gall (𝘈𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘶𝘴𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘶𝘭𝘪).

A Mottled dingy-brown click beetle (𝘈𝘨𝘳𝘺𝘱𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘮𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴). Not much liked by farmers due to the larvae eating the roots of crops, but still an interesting creature!

A Green bottle fly (𝘓𝘶𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘢 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤.). Not sure what species this is. The larvae feed on decaying flesh or feces, while the adults feed on pollen and nectar as well. They are important pollinators and a treat for the eye up close!

The 𝘗𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘦 family has many different species. Adults can be found in all sorts of shapes and colors, and this is the same for the nymphs. Some are really striking like this Red-legged shieldbug nymph (𝘗𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘢 𝘳𝘶𝘧𝘪𝘱𝘦𝘴).

The seeds of thistles is a preferred food for the European goldfinch (𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘶𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘶𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘴). Always happy to encounter these beautiful little birds!

Spring is in full swing! Two Common blue butterflies (𝘗𝘰𝘭𝘺𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴 𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘶𝘴) celebrating the start of macro season.

The Long-tailed tit (𝘈𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴) is one of my favorite birds. Today i saw a pair collecting #lichen for their nest. I have never seen one but i was able to locate it. They just started building it. It consists of moss, spider silk & lichen. Can't wait to see it finished!

I have no clue which species i'm looking at, but i love the contrast! ❤️‍
The orange #lichen is a bit too tiny to identify, and the gray/black one is .. no idea.

The Bengal match #lichen (𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘦𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘢) only grows in nutrient-poor environments. Although somewhat common in the Netherlands (according to data), i have not found this lichen that often. Happy to have found a spot near the town of Zeist!

An 𝘈𝘭𝘺𝘹𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘢 lichen on an Oak tree. Near impossible to identify by eye so i had to use a microscope. It turns out to be 𝘈𝘭𝘺𝘹𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘢. Uncommon to somewhat rare here. Happy to have found it! #lichen #macro #photography 📷

European robins (𝘌𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘳𝘶𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢) are incredibly cute, but can be pretty aggressive towards each other or other birds (sometimes fatal). Still always happy to see one in my little city garden!

This has to be the largest specimen of a Golden jelly fungus (𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘮𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢) i have ever seen. A common fungus in the Netherlands, and it is a parasite of wood decay fungi in the genus 𝘗𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘢. I love its bright yellow color and transparency!

Ha, what a coincidence. Punctelia borreri was the last lichen i photographed on the last day of 2024!
They quite common here, but beautiful nonetheless.

Peppered rock tripe (𝘜𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢) is an extremely rare lichen here in the Netherlands. I think there is only one spot known. During a holiday in Sweden i got lucky and found a few in Edshultshall.

My very first macro photo from back in 2015, using an old 50mm lens in reverse and some extension tubes. It is a 𝘟𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘯a lichen which i found on the chimney of my old house. This tiny and unseen (to me) world started my fascination for #macro #photography and #lichen in particular. 📷

I just love Cladonia lichens. Common or rare, every time i see them i get excited! Yesterday i found a new spot covered with huge Gray's Pixie-cup Lichens (𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘺𝘪). ❤️‍

Insects are awesome photography subjects. The more you zoom in, the more details are revealed!
In this shot i maxed my 2:1 lens on a Noondayfly (𝘔𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢).

I think this is 𝘛𝘩𝘺𝘳𝘦𝘶𝘴 𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘴. I thought it was some sort of fly, but from what i have read it belongs to the family of bees. What a beauty!
