#OTD in 1944 the installation of DShK machine guns on IS-2, ISU-122, and ISU-152 SPGs was approved. This machine gun came in handy during street fighting, as the mount allowed it to be used to flush anti-tank teams out of ambushes. #Tanks #History #WW2 #WWII

A bombing raid delivered 140 tons of bombs to Sankt Valentin #OTD in 1944. One of the targets was the Nibelungenwerk tank factory. The damage was so severe that production of the Jagdtiger had to be paused until the spring of 1945. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

A manual on fighting Tiger tanks was published #OTD in 1943. In addition to the tank's weak points, it described tactics used by Tiger units and instructed commanders to continue firing at disabled tanks until their total destruction in order to prevent recovery. #tanks #history #WWII #WW2

Production of the ZIS-30 tank destroyer was approved #OTD in 1941. Commanders liked the high power and long range of its 57 mm ZIS-2 gun, but only 100 were built due to a shortage of T-20 artillery tractors used for the chassis. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

#OTD in 1944 a Canadian intelligence summary described improvised anti-Panzerfaust armour used in the field. A layer of sandbags over the main armour covered with sheet metal was the most effective, but a wide variety of other methods were also used. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

The ISU-122BM (high power) tank destroyer was delivered for trials #OTD in 1944. It was designed to fight German superheavy tanks and with a muzzle velocity of 1000 m/s it was powerful enough to fight the Maus if one ever showed up on the battlefield. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

#OTD in 1944 Hitler cancelled all superheavy tank projects and development of all special vehicles on their chassis. The wonder weapons that some still believe could have won the war for Germany were killed off in their infancy. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

The Heavy Tank T29 was envisioned to fight King Tigers, but was not even close to finished when the war was already over. 1200 tanks were ordered, but the order was reduced to just 10 pilots and #OTD in 1947 reduced further to 8. #tanks #history

The RPG-40 anti-tank grenade was accepted into service #OTD in 1941. The grenade carried 760 grams of TNT, enough to breach up to 25 mm of armour and destroy a light tank. Heavier tanks could still be stopped by throwing the grenade at the tracks. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

#OTD in 1941 Stalin signed an order to begin mass production of bottles filled with incendiary liquid. The fluid either burst into flames upon contact with air or from a match that was ignited before throwing. This was a cheap and powerful anti-tank weapon. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII
