Human kindness has never weakened the stamina or softened the fiber of a free people. A nation does not have to be cruel to be tough.

This is just my third knitting project. I'm so excited to be learning cables. My grandmother was an incredible knitter and made the most beautiful cables. I can feel her watching, smiling. (Although she probably has some thoughts about my tension, LOL!)

The garden is brown and crunchy with frost upon us in the evenings. But this nasturtium is defying the rules; exploding with verdant leaves and bright blooms, climbing up surrounding shrubs toward the waning daylight. I don't want to let go the sun either!

The cheap, supermarket mums planted last year, regrew this year and bloomed beautifully. The secret is to keep them cut back until end of July, for lush blooms in the fall.

My love for hydrangeas runs deep. They are steadfast, blooming through drought and deluge. This species begins green-tinged white, and slowly turns light pink, then dark as the season passes. They are never more stunning than in the most somber pink at season's end.

Not the best picture, but...I found mullein in the backyard and, for some reason, this makes me stupid happy!

I wasn't able to clean up the garden before my surgery, so the Echinacea purpurea 'Magnus' that got trampled by deer and groundhogs, remained on the ground for weeks. I was able to visit the flower bed today and new flowers have sprouted all along the length of the fallen stems!

After 10 days, I'm recovered enough from surgery to take a short walk around the neglected garden. I sat a while with the Tupelo tree just to enjoy her company, and then was gifted one perfect, tiny lavender bloom. 💜

I am in awe of the lilac leaves. Dark green, plump, and firm in the midst of scorching drought that withered other "drought tolerant" plants. Such persistance. Such resistance. I'm trying to suss the magic in these. My books speak only of blossoms. It seems to me the leaves could be a powerful ally.

Gardening is hard this year. Deer, rabbits, groundhogs and japanese beatles. And if that wasn't enough, a drought *and* our well is contaminated with nasty things so we can't water even if we wanted to. Despite it all, the lilac is desperately trying for a second blooming. Go little lilac, go!

There are no flowers left in my garden. Thanks to the groundhog. This is from last year, about this time. Beautiful Sedum.

Looking forward to reading this one! Found at a used bookstore. Been looking for something like this for a while. Not herbs. Not social mores. Just flower magic!

I like to think she's protecting the one remaining Echinacea that survived the deer/groundhog/Japanese beetle onslaught.

Gladiolas are not usually perennial in zone 6b. But the previous owner of this house planted them along the septic outflow pipe, which keeps the ground warm enough for maintenance free blooms every year. Lucky me! 🌱

Matthiola incana. Around here we call it English Stock, but it's also called Gillyflower or perfume plant. My favorite #flower. Gorgeous swirls of petals, and the scent! It's intoxicating, warm, and spicy. Difficult to grow. Luckily, there's a greenhouse nearby that grows them reliably every summer.

I am so immensely grateful for the #flowers feed on Bluesky. When the sadness closes in and my chest tightens in grief, it is nothing less than magic to see endless blooms shared from every corner of the world. It restores a little of my lost faith. Huge thanks to all who participate. ❤️

First haul from my teeny-tiny (and woefully neglected) herb garden. Lemon balm, lemon thyme, spearmint, oregano, chamomile, lavender, chives. Getting ready to test the new dehydrator.
