They're desperately chasing that Fortnite money. It's also why they can't make a good Halo.

Literally survivorship bias. Most units failed at 10-12 years. Slightly Longer than a similar modern unit. You hauled units that survived or had been repaired. Not sure why that's hard to understand.

Refrigerators never commonly lasted 25 years. Stop falling for old advertisements.
November 10, 2025 at 11:47 PM
Your typical refrigerator still lasts 8-10 years like they used to. About 1/3rd need repairs by the end of the 5th year of ownership. Older units didn't last longer it's all survivorship bias and advertising.

"People buy cheaper but more complicated appliances." Is a totally different thing from "things just aren't built to last. Grandma had a Kenmore that lasted for 50 years!"
November 10, 2025 at 5:15 PM
And no, failure in 2 years is not normal. It's just not.
November 10, 2025 at 5:13 PM
They changed parts to plastic and glass to avoid rust and to make cheaper models. In the 1970's a mid tier fridge would run you about $2k in 2025 dollars. People don't like to spend that much while demanding more features and they get worse products for it.
November 10, 2025 at 5:12 PM
It's less brand dependent than about avoiding unnecessary features. Ice and water in the door, touch screens, and French doors are all best avoided. Brands vary significantly year to year. LG was really bad for a while, now they're better. Also do your annual maintenance.

The failure rate at 2 years is sub 30 percent. You cannot make going through 6 fridges in 10 years normal. Most appliances have always had a 8-10 year lifespan. "It will last forever so you'll never need a repair man!", was literally an ad campaign, that doesn't mean it was true.
November 10, 2025 at 4:56 PM
"Appliances are all bad now, so just replace it." Is a belief that helps companies be more profitable as people continue to buy the worst models possible because they believe they need stupid features rather than buying simple models that last longer.

Your pinned post has you both-sidesing American politics, so I assume you're a literal child.

French door fridges with water and ice in the door are garbage, but they always have been. Don't buy them. The salesman is not your friend.

It's like Tesla with the stupid pop out handles or folding screen phones. It's stupid don't buy it.
November 10, 2025 at 5:23 AM
It totally makes sense to increase the cost of the already extremely expensive r&d phase to make fridges worse rather than just adding stupid features & convincing consumers they need the new thing.
November 10, 2025 at 5:22 AM
You will not convince me that going through 6 fridges in a decade is normal because I have existed in the real world where I would have noticed going through all those refrigerators. I have literally worked in appliance design and I promise you they aren't spending extra money designing worse shit.
November 10, 2025 at 5:12 AM
Fridges don't last 2 years. If there a fucking gas leak on this website?
November 10, 2025 at 4:56 AM
Tech has gotten pretty shitty with sealed devices, but for the most part household goods function about the same as they always have. And don't even get me started on maintenance. Nobody does maintenance.
November 10, 2025 at 4:46 AM
Yeah the simple models just work, but everyone wants the French door water filter touchscreen thing even though they break.
