The 1891 Morts Dock Steam Crane at Cockatoo Island. Built at Morts Dock in Balmain, it operated at the Fitzroy Dock on the island. Relatively small in size, it could lift 10 tons. This reciprocating twin cylinder steam engine crane was restored to working order by the SHFT volunteers. #navalhistory

I’m working out at Cockatoo Island with our colleagues at the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust for a few weeks. I’ve mostly engaged with those years when shipbuilding occupied the whole island, but yesterday had the opportunity to explore some of its earlier convict history.
