And so isn't that more or less the same thing as modern MT? It's just that we didn't have the language of genAI back in the 2010s when modern MT took this step and so we regard it as normal in google translate and similar tools

Hence why it's completely unreliable on facts: it makes up answers that sound good, not answers that are true. Again my understanding is limited but this is how I think it basically works

– based on which it makes educated guesses as to the correct translation. The way I understand it, isn't this also basically how text-based genAI works? You say or ask something and it composes a response based on probabilities it's learned from its massive amounts of training data

Machine translators (MTs) used to be trained with word equivalences and grammar rules but by the time I started uni in 2016, it was already the case that all self-respecting MTs used probability data instead, including google translate. So the MT gets trained on massive amounts of data –

Entirely possible, I have no idea :/ I do wonder though about the extent to which all modern machine translation is/could be called genAI-based. I'm a translator but machine translation isn't my field at all so my understanding isn't that sophisticated but here's what I mean:

I've heard people say they like DeepL for Finnish machine translation. Again don't have personal experience unfortunately but at least it looks free?

Oof talk about stuff that hadn't even crossed my radar yet in the disinvestment process. For individual words sanakirja.fi and sanakirja.org are my go tos. Ik sanakirja.fi has a machine translator too but iirc it's probably paywalled (and can't speak for quality as I've only used it a couple times)
