Mom.
Scientist. Explorer. Ocean advocate.

I study microbial dynamics in the ocean using HOVs, ROVs, and cutting edge tech. ❤️ extreme environments; seek to understand biological complexity and resilience.
Aurora light show is beginning here in Athens GA. Have bionics and telescope, will photo…

Incredible aurora show tonight in Athens GA. Really unbelievable!!! Get outside and look up. Put your phone on a long exposure (>5s) and, boom:

Prof Hand Paerl was my PhD advisor. Hans retired 1 July after a 50 yr career at UNC Institute of Marine Sciences. Hans and his wife Barbara are family. I learned so much from Hans about being a great scientist and about being a good person. The world needs more people like these two. Thank you Hans!

There’s a reason they are attacking science … Carl Sagan was so incredibly wise.

We have to fight tooth and nail to restore science funding and to protect the scientific work force because science makes America exceptional.

May the following provide everyone with a much needed chuckle today. F rom Mandy’s Mom-world chronicles…checked in with my middle kid to see what they did today (in the Bern Oberland with their Dad). This is why I have gray hair…

Heading to Germany - finally after hours of delays because of thunderstorms - to visit my friends and colleagues in Bremen.

Happy 75th birthday
to the National Science Foundation #NSF 🎉🎊 🙌Thanks for all the work you support to advance our understanding of how biogeochemical processes in the #ocean sustain all life on Earth, including
us humans. The #ocean is a complexity engine that needs our protection. #NSFfunded

Today has been a rough one. Here a little ocean 💙💙 pick me up. From sunrise to the sea floor, 3800m depth near hydrothermal vents, life abounds.

Today’s moment of ocean zen 🌊 💙

We all need some beauty right now. I’m an oceanographer. I study the microbes - tiny geological engines - that help keep Earth habitable. I’ll post a few ocean images each day. These sunset shots are from offshore VA in 2018 on board the R/V Atlantis. 🌊 💙

The competitive research grants that the federal government invests in universities - in this case UGA - results in massive dividends for the state. Research funding provides jobs and trains scientists, engineers, and more and drives the innovations that make America great. Support STEM research!!!

Today has been rough for everyone so I am pleased to present “Ducks in the Snow”

(for the record, these are NOT *my* ducks; it’s far too cold for the ducks to be outside)

Ever wonder what it feels like to see a deep sea geyser - a hydrothermal vent - up close and personal (through the viewport of a HOV)? I’ve been lucky enough to have this experience multiple times—wonder, awe, and gratitude. Thankful I can experience this and share it with others.

I’m a scientist who studies microbes & biogeochemistry in the oceans. I document how microbes cycle materials in the ocean. Those little ‘bugs’, as we call them, keep Earth habitable. I seek to understand how those microbial engines are adapting to this changing world. #resilience #biocomplexity
