2/3 It shows that at every stage, pilot whales suffer profoundly. The welfare impacts are severe: anxiety, breathlessness, confusion, fear, panic, pain, helplessness. #pilotwhales are sentient, intelligent beings. They never abandon each other, forced to witness their loved ones' slaughter.

⚠️ 🐬 New scientific critique of the Faroe Island pilot whale hunt: Our new welfare assessment published in Biology Letters highlights the negative impacts on pilot whales hunted in the #FaroeIslands & disproves claims that the hunt is swift and efficient. 1/3

The 20th meeting of the London Protocol just concluded, where #marinegeoengineering took stage in discussions about ocean governance. Current marine geoengineering proposals raise major concerns & none are ready for deployment. The precautionary approach remains paramount. 1/2

🌊 40 countries officially take a stand against deep-sea mining!Antigua & Barbuda & Romania have recently joined the call. The message is clear: The deep sea is not a resource to be exploited.
It's a vital part of our planet that needs protection.

3/3 The solution? Mediterranean countries must cut CO2 emissions by an average of 6% per year starting in 2030 to still achieve the 2°C target of the Paris Agreement.
The numbers are clear. The time to act is now.

2/3 Our new report reveals the dramatic situation in the Mediterranean region:

🔹 The region has already "spent" its 1.5°C budget
🔹 At current emission rates, the remaining carbon budget is exhausted by 2035.
🔹 We're spending faster than we can afford
October 20, 2025 at 3:01 PM
What is a carbon budget? 🤔

Think of it like a bank account – but for #CO2 emissions. Scientists have calculated how much CO2 we can still emit, or 'spend', before exceeding the Paris Agreement targets.

3/3 We have to remain as much as possible below the 2°C threshold, as defined in the Paris Agreement. And this is still achievable - if #Mediterranean countries reduce emissions by ~6% annually starting in 2030, as shown in our and BC3s latest report.

2/3 The Mediterranean's geography makes it uniquely vulnerable. As a semi-enclosed sea with limited connection to the Atlantic, it can't shed heat the way the open ocean can. Warming from surrounding land masses intensifies the effect. The region heats faster than almost anywhere else on Earth. 🔥

Why is the Mediterranean a climate hotspot? 🌡️

The numbers:
🔹Carbon budget of the Region exhausted by 2035 at current emission levels ⚠️
🔹Region Warming 20% faster than the global average
🔹Sea Surface Temperature: +1.5°C in just 40 years.

3/3 🌎 The Barcelona Convention unites all 21 Mediterranean countries. The framework for cooperation exists.

What's missing? Political will. The fossil fuel era must end. Regional action must begin. Science gave us the roadmap. Policy must act.

2/3 Marine life under severe threat.🐟

What we're losing:

🔹 Corals are already bleaching
🔹 Species are migrating north.
🔹 Food chains are collapsing.

But there's still hope. Staying within 2°C is possible - if countries cut emissions 6% annually from 2030.

🚨 The #Mediterranean is running out of time. New study from OceanCare the Basque Center for Climate Change (BC3) shows the region's carbon budget will be exhausted by 2035 at current emission rates. The region already passed 1.5°C warming.

3/4 ➡️ Cruise ships and container ships primarily operate in the 10-20 knot range, while cargo ships and tankers show more moderate speeds, with a notable portion traveling at safer speeds of 5-10 knots.
➡️ 80%+ of merchant vessel distance traveled above 10 knots in both 2023 and 2024
October 8, 2025 at 5:30 PM
2/4 ➡️ PASSENGER & RO-RO FERRIES: Nearly three-quarters of ferry traffic exceeds 15 knots, with almost a third above 20 knots – speeds that make whale collisions almost certainly fatal. Ferries are the main source of collision risk & underwater noise for endangered fin & sperm whales.

2023 vs. 2024: #Ship speeds unchanged despite protection zone 🚢🚨 Since the designation of the NW Mediterranean as PSSA by the @imohq.bsky.social, the comparative analysis by Quiet-Oceans, commissioned by OceanCare, shows the shipping industry has not adopted IMO speed reduction recommendations. 1/3
October 7, 2025 at 1:26 PM
3/3 The solution exists: Mandatory 10-knot limits would save whales while cutting CO2, noise & air pollution at minimal cost.

12 NGOs, including #OceanCare, & 60 scientists are calling on #Spain to make speed limits mandatory in the Cetacean Migration Corridor. Voluntary measures are not enough.
October 3, 2025 at 2:33 PM
2/3 One year later: speeds unchanged.

The results:

→ 48 million km traveled through the protection zone
→ 57.5% at speeds above 10 knots (the lethal threshold)
→ Merchant vessels: 82.8% above safe speeds
→ Ferries: 90.4% above 10 knots, nearly 30% over 20 knots
October 3, 2025 at 2:33 PM
Are ships slowing down in the NW #Mediterranean whale protection zone? Our new data says no. 🐋⚠️

In 2023, the @imohq.bsky.social (IMO) designated this area as a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) with voluntary speed limits of 10-13 knots to protect endangered whales from ship strikes.

The very sad news has just reached us at OceanCare that Dr. @janegoodall.org, the world-renowned primatologist and conservationist, has passed away. Our tribe of conservationists and animal defenders has lost its most senior elder, someone who has strongly guided the movement's moral compass. 🕊️ 1/2

2/3 What begins as wonder can quickly become danger – for both species. These powerful, intelligent animals can harm swimmers, while humans often put these vulnerable creatures at risk of boat strikes and entanglement; some have even been attacked by humans.
