Heading home now, after an awesome week in Hobart! So much great Antarctic science happening here.

Also: lovely people. Shame they’re so darn good at cricket 🏏

Hello Hobart! Excited to be visiting, to give a talk at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, and a keynote at the @ACEAS annual meeting. Should be a great week (and the weather is amazing!)

Some people steal paper clips from the stationary cupboard… others think bigger… 😉

Two stories juxtaposed on the BBC website... sigh.

Anyone else spot the irony here?

Happy Midwinter from Antarctica!

We spent it at Elephant Island, where Shackleton and his men were marooned before their incredible escape and rescue.

A privilege to be here at this time of year.

Last night we were breaking through sea ice, in the dark, in blizzard conditions. My respect for the skill of the officers and crew of the ship just reached a new level…!

A @bas.ac.uk tradition... when the ship departs Rothera Research Station for the last time, the winterers remaining on base light flares to bid us farewell.

They will now continue their science and activities on base throughout the winter, while we proceed back to sea to continue ours.

Apple Watches are amazing gadgets, and can tell you the time of sunrise and sunset for wherever you are in the world... this time of year in Antarctica, the calculation is relatively simple.... 🤣

Regular visits from seals help keep our spirits up!

Conditions in the Antarctic winter can be pretty hostile, but science continues... this is deployment of an instrument that is lowered to just above the seabed, and gives us data on ocean temperature, salinity, oxygen content, and other important variables.

Our Antarctic expedition is hitting the screens today - ITV News coverage throughout the day, and for the next 2 weeks! Great that we can bring such important science to the public - huge thanks to Martin Stew, Mike Field and the ITV team for enabling this.

Happy #WorldOceanDay !!

Down here in Antarctica, we will spend it measuring the ocean and sampling the sea floor, to understand better how ice loss is impacting climate and ecosystems.

The views continue to amaze…!

With such short days, the Antarctic sunrises and sunsets start to merge into one... yesterday's was spectacular....

Another week or so, and the sun will not rise at all.

Some people asked me why I wanted to work in Antarctica in winter....

The days in Antarctica are shrinking rapidly, and in just a few days the sun won't rise above the horizon at all....

We're using our ever-dwindling daylight to look for wildlife here in Antarctica... yesterday we saw dozens of humpback whales, sometimes accompanied by bonus penguins....!

The view inside Börgen Bay, Antarctica. We are collecting water samples to understand how glaciers and the ocean influence each other in winter.

Visiting the very excellent Palmer Research Station, on the Antarctic Peninsula. A great opportunity to support and progress collaboration with US researchers, who are key scientific partners. They are doing critical work here on climate change, ecosystems, and a host of other issues.

We push southwards into the dark Antarctic night, the ship's searchlights picking out insane swirls of snow in a blizzard...

Guess where I’m heading today….!

Excited for a winter expedition to Antarctica. (Forecast was from a few days ago; I’m hoping it wont be quite this cold…though the chance of sunshine is kind of small this time of year…!🤣)

Wish me luck…!
