New book!! 📕

Antarctica is intimately connected to the rest of our planet, affecting climate, ecosystems, cultures and society. Our new book draws together international experts to explore this influence, and to understand what humans are doing to Antarctica (1/n)

Heading home now, after an awesome week in Hobart! So much great Antarctic science happening here.

Also: lovely people. Shame they’re so darn good at cricket 🏏

Hello Hobart! Excited to be visiting, to give a talk at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, and a keynote at the @ACEAS annual meeting. Should be a great week (and the weather is amazing!)

Two stories juxtaposed on the BBC website... sigh.

Anyone else spot the irony here?

I am co-convening a meeting at the Royal Society later this year, with @krhendry.bsky.social and other very excellent polar science colleagues. If you have interests relating to Antarctica and the impacts of climate change, please consider participating!
Are you a scientist with an interest in #ClimateChange and Antarctica? This September, join a team of leading oceanographers & climate scientists from @bas.ac.uk for a scientific meeting at the Royal Society: royalsociety.org/science-even... @oceanandice.bsky.social @krhendry.bsky.social

Some personal reflections, at the end of a remarkable expedition... we've seen amazing things, and experienced Antarctica in the depths of its dark winter. We're returning home with an unparalleled dataset, and a deeper appreciation of this awe-inspiring place.

Happy Midwinter from Antarctica!

We spent it at Elephant Island, where Shackleton and his men were marooned before their incredible escape and rescue.

A privilege to be here at this time of year.

Last night we were breaking through sea ice, in the dark, in blizzard conditions. My respect for the skill of the officers and crew of the ship just reached a new level…!

📢 New paper alert! 📢

New insight into how sea ice controls the ocean uptake of carbon dioxide around Antarctica, obtained from the unique year-round Rothera Time Series.

Delighted to be part of this study, led by the very excellent Elise Droste.

A @bas.ac.uk tradition... when the ship departs Rothera Research Station for the last time, the winterers remaining on base light flares to bid us farewell.

They will now continue their science and activities on base throughout the winter, while we proceed back to sea to continue ours.

Apple Watches are amazing gadgets, and can tell you the time of sunrise and sunset for wherever you are in the world... this time of year in Antarctica, the calculation is relatively simple.... 🤣

Check out our latest and greatest on Antarctic glacial melt and its impact on marine life, led by the awesome Jack Pan!

Perfectly-timed publication, given that I'm currently in the Antarctic gathering more data on these things.....!!

Conditions in the Antarctic winter can be pretty hostile, but science continues... this is deployment of an instrument that is lowered to just above the seabed, and gives us data on ocean temperature, salinity, oxygen content, and other important variables.

Happy #WorldOceanDay !!

Down here in Antarctica, we will spend it measuring the ocean and sampling the sea floor, to understand better how ice loss is impacting climate and ecosystems.

The views continue to amaze…!
