Constitution day today, the nation's 250th next year... A democracy if we can keep it. I remember the Bicentennial celebration. I was young enough to not be aware of our failures. I'm no longer innocent and will never feel that kind of patriotism again.

Today's recommended reading: On Tyranny by Timothy Snyder. I asked for the graphic edition for Christmas a couple of years ago, and my mom was baffled. She understands now.

Photojournalist Bill Biggart died when the second tower collapsed on him on 9/11, but the film he shot that day and his flash card were recovered from the debris and developed, along with his flash card.

You can see his amazing photos of 9/11, the last photos he took while alive, here:

We can, in fact, oppose ALL political violence, no matter the form, source, or reasoning.

Genocide (& supporting it) is bad.
Ethnic cleansing is bad.
Murdering people in a boat off Venezuela is bad.
Murdering people for Existing While Black is bad.
Shooting someone whose views are repellant is bad.

New Mexico has issued a public health order that removes federal restrictions to COVID-19 vaccine access so that pharmacies in New Mexico can vaccinate people of all ages and risk profiles. Every state need to do this!

Samsung has nerve! They sent me a satisfaction survey for the issue they automatically think they resolved. They didn't. They've owed me a refund for a returned item that they authorized and acknowledged receipt of on June 9th. Warehouse lost it. Or something. Fuck Samsung.

A government-sanctioned "truth arbiter" will soon arrive at CBS. Their role will be to ensure that journalists do not criticize this Administration or express views that conflict with its agenda.

This is a betrayal—not just of journalistic independence, but of the public trust. 🧵

That this disease went from an incurable 100% death sentence to something preventable in the space of my lifetime is stunning to me. Compare to early modern Europe, where smallpox and plague were endemic for generations.

Below, a discussion of the test results. I truly never thought I'd see this.
Experts say a twice-yearly injection that offers 100% protection against HIV is 'stunning'
A study shows that a twice-yearly shot was 100% effective in preventing new HIV infections in women in Africa.

UPDATE on The latest freedom flotilla that was headed to Gaza:

They have detained the only black activist and beaten him, which happens to be Chris Smalls (the advocate that won against Amazon in court)

He has not yet been returned and our politicians are saying nothing.

Don't buy a phone directly from Samsung. I received a defective phone, returned it with authorization within 2 days. They received it June 9th, and I cannot get a refund from them. They keep giving me the runaround and referring it to a local office. Then they email me wanting to assume my issue

Talk about The Wire, Sopranos, Game of Thrones all you want, but the greatest US television program ever made is Sesame Street. It's not even close. 50+ years of treating kids across class, ethnicity, religion not as mini-consumers...but as citizens with a stake in this world.

Remnants of the local July 4th parade are going by my house. I can't with the American flag this year. The feeling of revulsion is strong. Lots of people have felt this way forever, but knowing it, empathizing with it, and agreeing with it are still different from feeling it in the gut.

He was admitted after he fell and injured his arm. But because there are absolutely zero transmission protocols in hospitals and they let disease fly around and don’t require masks he got Covid there and died.

This is not a unique story. Last I read 30% of Covid cases are hospital-acquired.

Very unsettled this morning. Unnerving things going on at work. Can't be more specific than that, but I'm suddenly less sure of my tenuous job security. No clue how much is situation specific or driven by effects of all this *waves arms*

Medicaid isn’t a handout.
It’s the nurse at your grandma’s bedside.
The doctor delivering a baby in a rural clinic.
The meds keeping a disabled neighbor breathing.

Half of U.S. kids rely on it.

Call it what it is:
Compassion made policy.
Cutting it is cruelty, plain and simple.

"Oh no!" said the prince.

"My curse can only be lifted by a prince listening to me."

"Of course," said the prince, and bent down with puckered lips.

"What are you doing?!"

"Kissing you, like you asked!"

"No!"

The frog hopped away, muttering.

I would have told you
that I was worried
this summer would be defined
by cases of razor blade throat
and boots stomping on faces,
but if you ask me now
I must tell you
that I am worried
this summer will be defined
by something even worse.

Senator Ted Cruz posted a dramatic video of LAPD cars on fire with the caption “this… is… not… peaceful.” What he didn’t mention? The footage was from 2020, not 2025. His post on X falsely implied it was current, part of a broader effort to spread lies and manufacture a crisis.
