As I lost my father recently, I had to cancel my last classes this term. Some of the messages I got in return were so important that they kept me going over the last few weeks. One might find it too much, but frankly, in 2025, this shared humanity with the younger generation is what keeps me going.

Today marks the 41st anniversary of the introduction of martial law in Poland: a measure taken to halt the Solidarność movement. This is the most well-known photo from that time, taken by Chris Niedenthal on 14.12. You can see here the movie played in the "Moscow" cinema, Coppola's "Apocalypse Now"

It has been long time coming, given the close encounters between GOP and Law and Justice parties since 2015. I do hope that the Polish society won't take this bait, given how much the country has changed for the better since we entered the EU in 2004.
Fuller version of Trump security strategy reportedly calls for "pulling Poland away from EU"

Worth starting the day with a good deed, like deleting your long-unused Twitter account!

„By one estimate, AI companies collectively will generate $60 billion in revenue against $400 billion in spending this year. The one company that is making a lot of money from the AI boom, Nvidia, is doing so only because everyone else is buying its chips in the hopes of obtaining future profits.”
Something Ominous Is Happening in the AI Economy
The last time so much wealth was tied up in such obscure overlapping arrangements was just before the 2008 financial crisis.

Not-so-fun, but an interesting story: since I will be in Warsaw for the next month or so, I figured I could take advantage of the introductory military training offered by the Polish army. Only, there are no places left anywhere around (red dots), unless I'd like to travel some 400 km away.

Tomorrow, I have the concluding sessions of the "Narratives, Uses and Representations of the Past" course, so, of course, I prepared a meme.

This sounds bad. Europe needs to step in, but frankly, I’m not optimistic about that either.

Dear #skystorians, could you please guide me towards an *early* French historiography of World War II and the early postwar (1945-1948)? I am only finding either testimonies/biographies or things related to Algeria/resistance. Thanks!

nb: by early I mean 50s-60s

And another story on the US-Russia plan.
Story here with exclusive new details: The Trump admin and Russian officials have drawn up a sweeping new proposal to end Russia’s war in Ukraine that envisions major concessions from Kyiv and urged President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to accept it...

School for ???? Research.

And to think that Hannah Arendt was teaching there. Academic freedom no more.
The New School is now a place where students cannot major in History, Anthropology, Sociology, Global Policy & International Affairs, Global Studies, Urban Studies, or Environmental Studies. And more pauses, closures, and mergers coming down the pike this week. The future is uncertain.

The key question now is, what will Europe do?
Well, once again it was shown that Trump's "support" for Ukraine was a con. He has been working with Putin in secret to craft a "peace" deal which the US and Russia will now try to shove down Ukrainian and European throats. Just sent out this free piece. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

I love teaching, even if it sometimes makes me feel like an old auntie. Yesterday I had my students listen to Joni Mitchell for the first time (and that was apropos of our session, since they had to read Zadie Smith's essay on listening to JM). Of course, the presentations delivered:
