Looking through the lens of "When Tatum is Back" one goal for the Celtics this year is to develop low-salaried players that can contribute to helping the team contend again.
Some candidates are emerging.
Before the season I thought Hugo would spend time in Maine. Now: maybe not one minute.

That was a blistering half for Anfernee Simons.
I really like when Mazzulla put two and even three of Minott, Hugo and Walsh on the floor at the same time. It gives the Celtics so much quickness and vigor on the defensive end.
Young Hugo is a great pick at the ned of the first round.

For what it's worth, the Celtics are allowing the lowest opponents points per game of any team in the league.

Sean Grande: "The Celtics have outscored teams by 7 points through the first 8 games (+0.8).
Individual player +/-? It's not even close.
Queta +52
Pritchard +19
Minott +15
Hauser +11"
me: They'd win a lot more with a second real center. Other teams' big bodies are pummeling them.

Scheierman was in the game for like a minute and got pulled for tossing an unwise behind the back pass.

Very impressive what Mazzulla's doing with with the Celtics.
Minott and Hugo are finds.
When White & Pritchard start hitting 3s they'll be up another tier.
It's a very tough game tonight though. 5th game in 7 nights vs a strong opponent. Who covers starting guard Durant? Pritchard? :)

While no one was looking, Baylor Scheierman quietly had a good, and mistake free game, last night for the Celtics.
He played strong defense, and has come a long way on that end.
Most importantly, he didn't force a shot; didn't even take one. He just played his role instead of forcing things.

Queta is at the, um, center, of the Celtics success or failure this season. If he's good, they can really compete.
So tonight was beneficial. It would've been nice for morale if his 3 went down.
Also go Minott!

If Queta would look for his shot more, ala Eurobasket, & if they used him as a real offensive option, opposing Ds would collapse more which would open up the 3.
He doesn't have to shoot a ton, just enough to be a threat.
This would also scramble the interior D & improve the Celtics rebounding.

Is anyone seeing enough talent in Derik Queen to justify giving up an unprotected 2026 draft pick for him?
I mean I wish the young man well and hope he thrives, but man, the Hawks seem to have fleeced the Pelicans. (Perhaps defeathered is a better term.)
This is fire Nico level stuff.

Sabonis led the NBA last season in total rebound percentage at 22.4%.
Charles Bassey didn't play enough to qualify, but his 24/25 TRB% was 21.7%.
So far, the Celtics can't rebound this season...
Hmmm.

The other thing about the Celtics is, though I'm rooting for wins, losses sting less this year.
I'm not sure which will turn out to be the preferable outcome.

Rebounding is the problem for the Celtics. No matter who they start there will be weaknesses, but try Queta with Boucher to begin. This will give them max boarding potential with players in their natural spots.
Also, maybe start Simons so Pritchard can go back to being a super sub.

Hugo was up at the scorers table near the end of the 3rd, but didn't get in.
Judging by the Celtics' pack of perimeter containment last night, I think we'll see him join the rotation very soon.
In other hoops news, Wemby has broken basketball physics.

All potential Celtics front office moves this season should be looked at through this lens:
Assuming Tatum is back to his all-pro self, the Celtics are one key big man addition away from being title contenders in 26-27.

When Neemias Queta moves sharply, he's a good center. When he starts overthinking, he gets out of position and makes mistakes. There was no big difference between Poetl and Queta last night, and Poetl's really solid.
This guy has a growing game that he's just getting comfortable with.

I'm eager to see Anfernee Simons tonight vs the Raptors.
Probably even more important is Queta's performance over the coming months.
With not much backup, this season it's gonna be: As goes Queta, so goes the Celtics.

The Celtics are playing fast. 52 fga at the half. And they're doing in without turning the ball over- 4 tos at the half.

The story of #Celtics media day was SPEED. Many players mentioned the emphasis on a higher pace.
I believe Joe Mazzulla is looking to institute a hyper Indiana Pacers type offense, which will be a lot of fun.

If in the spring, Tatum's himself and Queta shows he's capable, that's a genuinely good #Celtics team.
Now the rotation looks something like:
Queta, Tatum, Brown, White, Simons
Boucher, Hauser, Pritchard, Garza?, plus whoever emerges.

It only takes four on-court matchups to get from Bill Russell to now. Just four degrees of separation.
Russell vs Walt Frazier
Frazier vs Robert Parish
Parish vs Kobe
Kobe vs LeBron
In January the careers of these players will have spanned from 1956 to 2026. 70 years.
