Well I wasn’t aware there were welding bots that small, but at least at this point they are still CAD run & not AI run. So I guess I’ll predict that it’ll be about 2 years before welding is eaten by ai too… great, just fuckin great.

Which is to say sure a robot will weld a car, but a robot (so far) can’t weld an aftermarket tow hitch to the back of a Honda civic.

Yes sure, industrial robotic welding is a thing, but those tend to be tig welding not SMAW aka stick welding, and robots do builds and not repairs and much welding is repairs or custom work. So far welding robots are assembly line only, not custom work, not repairs, not stick.

And it’s terribly odd thinking that my old fallback of “at least I can take my clothes off for money” gig is being taken over by AI. Oldest profession and all that. Fuckin weird.

I had a couple years working in SW camming, and a couple years working as a software dev, a few as software architect, some as devops, and it’s strange watching AI come eat up every career I’ve ever had. Taking a welding class in January, let’s see how long it takes for AI to pickup a stick welder.

I wish I could just leave fb. But too many of the groups I work with use fb and I haven’t been able to get them all to convert to something else. I want to walk away from the platform, but I don’t want to walk away from the people that use it exclusively.

Fb’s algorithm currently is very tuned to make me angry, not happy. People engage when angry, they comment and get into fights and stay in the app. Fb want engagement, not happiness. It’s tuned so strongly that it’s taking effort to find posts by my actual friends.
