Founder/engineer; I build infrastructure for search. When I'm not writing Rust or Nix, I'm bloviating on business. Austin, TX.
Hello world! I'm putting together a series of talks and team trainings on Nix and NixOS. (Two is a series, right?)

There's a lot to narrow down. So I would love to know: if you're Nix-curious, what questions do you have, or frustrations have you experienced?

Clever hidden design element for the new City of Austin logo: a cheeky little “y” that represents “y tho”

Bring back high quality local tech meetups!
AustinSystems.org first meeting was a big success! Had some great talks, 25+ people attended, free pizza and a great view.

We have some very pragmatic search content going out on the @bonsai.io blog and I am chuffed. More on the way.
In Part 1, @max.io shared a guide to building autocomplete in Elasticsearch & OpenSearch.

In Part 2, he shows you how to scale it to 6M docs and runs side-by-side load tests with a large hybrid search index.

The true nuggets of wisdom in search relevancy are surprisingly hard to find.

Angel of the Lord: He is not here, He is risen, just as He said.
Come and see the place where He lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead.

Alito: Okay, first of all, this violates ALL sorts of rules

Thomas: This was a LAWFUL execution, who is God to interfere

And they’re all still billionaires. Anyway this is the stick. Next comes the carrot: targeted relief in exchange for greater fealty.

I Iike Rust but I also write a lot of Ruby. So I ported Result and Option to Ruby and integrated Option into ActiveRecord. Sounds like an April Fool’s joke. But no, just the usual unhinged behavior over here.

It seems to prevent Republicans from illegally dismantling government, @schumer.senate.gov will courageously vote to let them go ahead and make it legal? Cool cool cool
A shutdown would give Donald Trump the keys to the city, state, and country.

Musk has said he wants a shutdown, and reporting has shown he is already making plans to use the shutdown to expedite his destruction of key government programs and services.

The engineers will do a great job rearchitecting your product not to need what they’re supposed to be helping to sell 🤫

If you put me in a room with the engineers that built your product I will be 10x more engaged and interested than I am on a zoom call with some sales reps.

We worked for months with USAID to build an $85,000,000 project to end TB in two regions of the Philippines.

The project is funded by private money, the Philippine government, and matching USAID funds.

It could provide a blueprint for eliminating TB worldwide--except it's...not happening.

Alright I think it's time for me to start blogging about my team's #Nix journey. Three interesting milestones: All-In-Rewrite (Spring '24), Tinkering In Dev (Fall '23), and First Demo From @grahamc.com (what was that—2016?!)

Had one of those "surely I'm doing it wrong" afternoons writing some #Rust. The kind of code that has me calling match on a &str. Alas, quick prototypes do not allow pausing for perfection. Onward!

So I spent some time this holiday break getting a development environment set up in Windows, and it was... surprisingly reasonable?! Interesting that #Rust played a notable part in that for me...

Elasticsearch did a convenient thing with storing the document _source, but for so many use-cases, it's redundant. Trying to think about reasons why—for, you know, search—it should ever be used, and that list is coming up a lot shorter than reasons not to store it… 🤔

So if Engineering is the bones of search, and if Information Retrieval / Data Science / ML is the mind… then Product is the heart and flesh, the will and motivating force behind it all.
