Neither man nor woman, but a force of nature. Great Value Baba Yaga. (Avatar and banner both by Dakota Curry)
Ayo collects nicknames, all granted to them by others. Their habit of tinkering, even in childhood (with legos) earned them "Little Architect" from the adults in camp, and "Tinkerton" from their crush Dromak (a tradition Jamil now carries on).

Does your character go by anything other than their name?

Do they have a nickname, a pseudonym, or a title people use for them? Or earn one over the course of the story?

Do they like it, or prefer their name?

Ayo understands their physical limits uncomfortably well, which is good because messing that up with their condition could just straight up kill them. However, it also means that they're very good at going right up to that line. Most people would call it a "death wish." Ayo calls it "making do."

How is your character at knowing their limits?

Do they understand their flaws and work around them? Push through to their detriment? Completely overestimate themselves?

Do they improve or get worse in time?

Ayo is a devout Muslim, and though they don't often voice it, they see the world of HOMEBOUND through that lens. Visibly, they wear hijab, so everyone knows and understands that they're religious, and yet every time they say something that underscores that fact, the other characters are surprised.

Is your character religious or spiritual?

Is there a god/gods in their world? Is their existence a matter of faith, or are physically present? Does your character believe?

Well, Ayo's story is bound up in their chronic illness so buckle up folks, this is gonna be a long and heavy one.

Content warnings for discussion of chronic illness, self-destructive behavior, and drug use.

A bit under the weather tonight, apologies if I am slow to respond!

On a related note: how does your character deal with illness?

Are they stoic? Whiney? Immune to it altogether? Just drink a healing potion?

Ayo doesn't like to think about the future too much. One day, far too soon, their illness will kill them, probably while they're trying to save someone else, and if they think too much about that, they'll never do anything else.
Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters

How much does your character think about the future?

Do they have plans for retirement and a pension set up? A distant dream but no real plans? Do they live each day as it comes and never think about it?

#SFFChat Q4: Snippet time (game edition)!

Early on, Ayo's instacart driver Clyde comes over to drop off groceries after they get sentenced to bedrest for going into a burning building. He starts asking about their inventions and, uh, we'll let the text do the rest of the talking.

#SFFChat Q3: the benefits of game-based storytelling

The main thing games bring to the table that other forms of media don't is interactivity. whether that's above-the-table discussion or the act of taking on the character's role, ultimately the player is in the driver's seat, not the author.
#SFFChat Q3: What unique storytelling opportunities do games (of any kind you wish to talk about!) offer?
December 4, 2025 at 11:44 PM
#SFFChat Q2: what kind of game would my story be?

Probably one of those on-rails dungeon crawlers with the tiles you lay out. Betrayal at House on the Hill, Dark Descent, that sort of thing.
#SFFChat Q2: If your story were a game of some kind, what would it be (e.g RPG, TTRPG, a boardgame of some kind, survival horror, first-person shooter, etc)?
December 4, 2025 at 11:28 PM
#SFFChat Q1: dating sim archetypes

Well I don't know any lingo, but Ayo would be the aloof one, Jamil the direct idiot, and Cassandra would play hard to get. Ayo's absolutely the healer, probably doing some weird blood magic. Jamil's a paladin. Cass is a wizard or other knowledge-seeker.
#SFFChat Q1: If your characters were in a dating sim (or another kind of game if you prefer), what roles would they have or what archetypes would they fulfill?

E.g. Healer, summoner, maybe in a dating sim they're the mayor's daughter, or in a farm sim they're an angry chicken! Be creative!

#SFFChat Intro

Hello! I'm M. Nyx (they/them), and in addition to video games, I also play TTRPGs and miniatures games! In fact, I'm currently in the process of making one of the latter, called GARBAGE GREMLINS!

Well...do I talk about Ayo's sparse apartment or use this as an excuse to talk about the haunted house? What a dilemma.

Eh, por que no los dos?

Ayo lives in an apartment in Cahokia (nee St. Louis) afforded to them by their success in the Equilibrium Scholarship program.

Ayo first met Arshia Marsh in the course of physical therapy for their chronic illness. Ayo was 8. Marsh was, well, being an immortal fish lady means you can crest 100 and not look more than about 35.

Marsh was flown in as a specialist for breathing issues. Fish out of water and all that...

speaking of gdt's FRANKENSTEIN, some thoughts! [SPOILERS]

aesthetically beautiful movie, and i adore that the creature was largely portrayed as attractive, if unnerving, as he was in the book.

i'm of two minds about the creature being almost entirely innocent right up until the wedding though.
apparently going straight from gdt's FRANKENSTEIN into Aphrodite's song from STRAY GODS was an incorrect decision

excuse me while i cry about fictional immortals for at least one hour.

Ayo always carries the remains of the wooden sword Jamil made swore his oath of redemption over. The same sword he used earlier that day to beat them, and which he then offered them to help save them both, and which Ayo broke in that attempt.

Ayo: "Local Journalist engages in tryst with demon from Beyond the Veil" (Ayo's a monsterfucker)

Jamil: "Jericho's Juggernaut? The Secret Pay for Play Behind New Essex's Star Striker" (Tobias Jericho approached him after practice, and later donated a LOT of money to his football club)

Ayo and Jamil both treat nature with the kind of reverence that only comes from surviving something that reminds you how small you really are. Their joint experience surviving a cataclysmic sandstorm before the age of 10 has both of them quite unwilling to go for a second round.

Ayo wears hijab, so we don't really see their hair. In substitution of discussing that, Ayo prefers to wear single-color scarves to cover their hair.

Jamil, in the tradition of soccer players the world over, keeps his hair short during the season. He lets it grow out on the off-season though.

Ayo and Jamil both grew up in a cramped refugee camp. One grew up to be a superhero, the other a soccer player. Physical touch is a necessity for both, and neither shies away from it.

Cassandra, on the other hand, is much more aloof, preferring to keep physical touch to professional gestures.

Ayo -- Samosas. Easy to make, everyone likes fried food, and usually low on allergens.

Jamil -- a premade charcuterie board: meat and cheese and crackers and he doesn't care how poor the quality is.

Cassandra -- if she has time, a homemade pasta of some sort. If she doesn't, cocktail shrimp

#SFFChat Q4: Excerpt time!

This comes from the most recent chapter in HOMEBOUND. Here we see Jamil, Ayo's childhood bully-turned-friend, expressing his own understanding of a defining, traumatic incident they both shared through the lens of Ayo's gender and faith. I'll let the text say the rest.

#SFFChat Q3: shoutout!

I just finished Time to Orbit: Unknown -- The Javelin Project by Derin Edala. Idk Edala's gender status, but the main character Aspen Greaves is nonbinary, and there's some other interesting gender stuff going on the book, like with the Friends.

#SFFChat Q2: trans status

In both HOMEBOUND and GRAY MATTERS, trans people are fully recognized outside of small pockets, usually cultural enclaves. That doesn't stop some individuals from being awful about it, but in large part the transphobes are shunned, not the trans people.
#SFFChat Q2: What is the status of trans and gender nonconforming people in your world? If you haven’t thought about it yet, use this moment to reflect!
November 20, 2025 at 6:20 PM
#SFFChat Q1: my trans characters!

The MC of HOMEBOUND, Ayo Saeed, is nonbinary! And the secondary protagonist of GRAY MATTERS, Gray, is a trans woman!

Ayo is a dedicated journalist and hobbyist tinkerer who literally cannot stop themself from helping others, even at great personal cost.
#SFFChat Q1: For the Trans Day of Remembrance, share a trans* (including nonbinary, Two-Spirit, or otherwise gender nonconforming) character from your work, OR, if you have none, share how one of your characters engages with gender!
