Does your character go by anything other than their name?
Do they have a nickname, a pseudonym, or a title people use for them? Or earn one over the course of the story?
Do they like it, or prefer their name?

Content warnings for discussion of chronic illness, self-destructive behavior, and drug use.
A bit under the weather tonight, apologies if I am slow to respond!
On a related note: how does your character deal with illness?
Are they stoic? Whiney? Immune to it altogether? Just drink a healing potion?

How much does your character think about the future?
Do they have plans for retirement and a pension set up? A distant dream but no real plans? Do they live each day as it comes and never think about it?

Early on, Ayo's instacart driver Clyde comes over to drop off groceries after they get sentenced to bedrest for going into a burning building. He starts asking about their inventions and, uh, we'll let the text do the rest of the talking.

The main thing games bring to the table that other forms of media don't is interactivity. whether that's above-the-table discussion or the act of taking on the character's role, ultimately the player is in the driver's seat, not the author.

Probably one of those on-rails dungeon crawlers with the tiles you lay out. Betrayal at House on the Hill, Dark Descent, that sort of thing.

Well I don't know any lingo, but Ayo would be the aloof one, Jamil the direct idiot, and Cassandra would play hard to get. Ayo's absolutely the healer, probably doing some weird blood magic. Jamil's a paladin. Cass is a wizard or other knowledge-seeker.
E.g. Healer, summoner, maybe in a dating sim they're the mayor's daughter, or in a farm sim they're an angry chicken! Be creative!

Hello! I'm M. Nyx (they/them), and in addition to video games, I also play TTRPGs and miniatures games! In fact, I'm currently in the process of making one of the latter, called GARBAGE GREMLINS!
* This week's questions will be about games, after I tortured our resident gamers with a game-related intro last week 🤣

Eh, por que no los dos?
Ayo lives in an apartment in Cahokia (nee St. Louis) afforded to them by their success in the Equilibrium Scholarship program.
What is your character's living situation like?
Do they have roommates? Pets? Live with family? Alone in a mansion? On the road? On a ship? Other?
Are they happy where they are, or striving for something else?

Marsh was flown in as a specialist for breathing issues. Fish out of water and all that...
Tell me a bit about the first time your character met someone important to them.
This could be a close friend, love interest, mentor, etc.
Did they like each other right away? Did they warm over time?

I feel like I ask about negative emotions a lot. So today tell me something that makes your character happy!
A small joy, like a sunset, a warm cup of cocoa, a good book, or time with their favorite person!

aesthetically beautiful movie, and i adore that the creature was largely portrayed as attractive, if unnerving, as he was in the book.
i'm of two minds about the creature being almost entirely innocent right up until the wedding though.
excuse me while i cry about fictional immortals for at least one hour.

What is something your character always carries with them?
In a purse, a bag, a secret pouch, a pocket?
Is there something they never travel without? Why?

Jamil: "Jericho's Juggernaut? The Secret Pay for Play Behind New Essex's Star Striker" (Tobias Jericho approached him after practice, and later donated a LOT of money to his football club)
A reporter from a scandal magazine has been secretly following your characters around.
What shocking headlines could they publish about them?
Did they have to take their actions out of context to get there?

How does your character feel about nature?
Do they like the outdoors? Have good survival skills?
Or do they prefer the comforts and amenities of a city?
Some combination of both?

Jamil, in the tradition of soccer players the world over, keeps his hair short during the season. He lets it grow out on the off-season though.
Here's an appearance one that I don't think we've talked about yet: What does your character's hair look like?
Do they have hair? Long or short? What color? How do they usually wear it? Is it important to them?

Cassandra, on the other hand, is much more aloof, preferring to keep physical touch to professional gestures.
How does your character feel about physical touch?
Are they fans of a handshake, hug, pat on the back, etc?
Do they prefer to keep their distance?
Does it matter how close they are to the other person?

Jamil -- a premade charcuterie board: meat and cheese and crackers and he doesn't care how poor the quality is.
Cassandra -- if she has time, a homemade pasta of some sort. If she doesn't, cocktail shrimp
It is character potluck day! Everyone is gathering for a meal!
What is your character bringing? Do they have a favorite dish/something they make in a pinch?
Bringing ice or crudité is also acceptable!

This comes from the most recent chapter in HOMEBOUND. Here we see Jamil, Ayo's childhood bully-turned-friend, expressing his own understanding of a defining, traumatic incident they both shared through the lens of Ayo's gender and faith. I'll let the text say the rest.

I just finished Time to Orbit: Unknown -- The Javelin Project by Derin Edala. Idk Edala's gender status, but the main character Aspen Greaves is nonbinary, and there's some other interesting gender stuff going on the book, like with the Friends.

In both HOMEBOUND and GRAY MATTERS, trans people are fully recognized outside of small pockets, usually cultural enclaves. That doesn't stop some individuals from being awful about it, but in large part the transphobes are shunned, not the trans people.

The MC of HOMEBOUND, Ayo Saeed, is nonbinary! And the secondary protagonist of GRAY MATTERS, Gray, is a trans woman!
Ayo is a dedicated journalist and hobbyist tinkerer who literally cannot stop themself from helping others, even at great personal cost.
