Meet our team 🍎 (Check Alt) [1/2]
Hi, my name is Kristen and I am director of NYKids and a professor of educational policy and leadership in the School of Education at the University at Albany. I started my career as an English New Language teacher and have always had a strong interest in reducing educational opportunity gaps particularly among those more vulnerable and marginalized. I am a bridging scholar who seeks to connect research to practice. My current focus is on working with scholars near and far in sharing lessons learned on the teaching and learning of collaborative continuous improvement in education. Aaron Leo is a cultural anthropologist whose research focuses on the education of newly-arrived immigrants and refugees. His scholarly interests center around newcomers’ educational aspirations and the influences of family on educational outcomes. Hi! I'm Manaswi Kattoju (she/her), a Grad student at UAlbany studying Strategic Game Design and Applied development. I'm the Webmaster and Social Media Intern here at NYKids! I love using art, design and storytelling to create engaging, meaningful content. I’m very passionate about research and making it easy and fun for everyone to interact with, promoting community access. My brain functions like the multiverse, each thought got its own spin-off ✨✨✨

Dr. Maria I. Khan, NYKids Research Collaborator, is a Fulbright Scholar and an education policy researcher specializing in improvement science, student success, higher education leadership, systemness, and international educational development. She currently serves as a Senior Research Associate at the National Association of Higher Education Systems (NASH). Paul Guay is a doctoral student in School Psychology at the University at Albany and a research assistant with NYKids. He is currently training in alternative school settings throughout the Capital District, with a focus on culturally responsive counseling and assessment. Paul’s research explores how technology can transform early literacy interventions - making them more personalized, engaging, and impactful for struggling readers. When he’s not analyzing data or working with students, you’ll likely find him behind a drum kit with his band, spending time with his family, or throwing a frisbee with his sheltie. Hi, my name is Jessie and I am a research assistant for NYKids. I am a doctoral candidate in the Department of Educational Policy and Leadership at the University at Albany SUNY. I have a background working in career and technical education, educational enrichment, and special education, as well as assisting graduate-level courses focused on continuous improvement in education systems. As my current research focuses on community schools and positive youth development, I am interested in highlighting youth voices to address today’s challenges through action research.
