Single stair elevator buildings in Europe will often have only two units per floor. Elevators are cheaper there as they are allowed to be smaller in size and payload.

It's the elevator that's really forcing the internal hallway. Gotta maximize units served by that expensive hardware.

Every time I got scolded I was taking action that maximized my safety. And didn't negatively impact anyone else's safety or travel time.

Another driver scolded me for rolling a stop, when I was going 10 mph and had clear sightlines and no traffic anywhere near me.

A jeep driver scolded me for not rolling the stop when I came to a complete stop at a busy intersection with lots of perpendicular traffic.

A cop scolded me for riding in the zebra to cross the street and enter the bike opposing bike lane, I was riding slower and far away from the only pedestrian the very wide zebra and we had the walk signal.
