The present club, The Heath GC, was founded in 1930 and was a 9 hole course until it was extended to 18 holes in 1971. The course is situated on a site called the Greatheath close to the town of Portlaoise. Subtle features dot the course and influence play on many holes.

An Irish inland golf course with robust turf that allows for year round play is The Heath GC in Co. Laois. The club, formerly known as The Queen's County Heath GC, dates to 1889.

An upgrading of the course was desired in the years after World War I and an invitation was extended to none other than Dr. Alister MacKenzie. The Good Doctor's course opened in 1925.
A wonderful club to visit for a game.

The course in Little Island began with 4 holes, saw and extension to 9 holes by Scottish professional David Brown in 1901, and was extended to 18 holes in 1911 with contributions from Brown again and also the great Harry Vardon.

With holes perched along the picturesque Cork Harbour, and others routed through and over an old quarry, splendid views and captivating golf await the golfer when he/she visits Cork GC.

The terrain packs plenty of interest, and the holes flow dramatically. You're awarded long vistas towards Lough Corrib in the distance along with plenty of views of the 800 year old castle. A little bit of tlc on the conditioning side of things would really help.

When discussing the finest 9 hole golf courses in Ireland, a course deserving of its place in the conversation is Ashford Castle out west in Co. Mayo. The course was designed by the great Eddie Hackett and this par 35 comes in at just under 3,000 yards.

Hard to imagine there's a golf course in Ireland, links excluded, that's in better condition than Royal Curragh GC for March. Supreme inland golfing terrain. Great to see some more tree removal taking place. Keep going and make it look more like a Curragh Plains golf course should look!

The course today retains much of their routing, with some green complexes sitting artistically into the landscape. The greens pack plenty of interest and are always in excellent condition. A widening of the playing corridors and green expansions would enhance the design.

The course was extended to 18 holes between 1936 and 1938 and was visited by Simpson and Gourlay. While the land does not possess huge changes in elevation, changes in direction are plentiful and there’s some nice short 4s (2nd, 5th and 18th).

The club was founded in 1896 and, similar to the beginnings of many clubs, changed location several times. The club moved to its present location of Newtown in 1923 and 9 holes opened for play in 1924.

Ireland’s golf courses are fortunate to have had input from some golden age greats. Messrs Colt, Braid, MacKenzie and Allison have all touched courses across the island. But, it is to the delightful duo of Tom Simpson and Molly Gourlay that we must thank for Kilkenny GC.

An aerial view of Dún Laoghaire GC from the 1960s. The course was designed by Harry Colt in 1910. The club moved location in 2007 which means that housing now rests on The Great Man's work.

This dreary weather has me dreaming of some magic by The Great Man. Colt's Tandridge is a wonderful place for a game.

A fine place for a game is one of Ireland's finest inland 9 hole courses, Blessington Lakes GC. You're guaranteed spectacular views stretching across the Blessington Lakes to the Wicklow mountains. The club, known as Boystown GC until 2009, began in 1998 on the land of Donie McEvoy.

Beginning in 1899 as Leinster Golf Club, Carlow GC's first course was 9 holes at Gotham, Co. Kildare. The club moved to its current location of Deerpark in 1922, with Cecil Barcroft on design duties. In 1937, the wonderful pair of Tom Simpson and Molly Gourly visited.

Established in 1893, Birr Golf Club's course is routed through eskers and rolling woodland, providing a splendid canvass for interesting golf. The club moved to its current location of The Glens, located to the north of the town, in 1909. It's a great year round golf course.

The magnificent Mountrath Golf Club in Laois began with 9 holes in 1929. Affiliation to the Golfing Union of Ireland came in 1932. The course became a full 18 hole golf course with the addition of 9 new holes which opened in 1994. This 6,271 yard Par 71 course requires accuracy and patience.
