When it comes to designing cities for biking and walking, Ghent Belgium may still not be as well known as Copenhagen, Amsterdam or Paris yet, but it’s one of the most inspiring cities in the world. I was honoured to do some work with them in 2019. Watch @streetfilms.bsky.social’s fantastic video:
Ghent Kicked Out the Cars So You Can Walk, Bike, Live & Thrive in the City (Velo-City 2024)

While most moderately busy roads are bare, most paths/sidewalks in the shade look like this. Studs probably a good idea to stay upright. #yegbike #yeg

And not once did they ever turn their head to acknowledge anything else other than vehicles. #yeg #yegbike #banrightonred

Gotta love construction detours that put pedestrians and active transport users uncomfortably close to turning vehicles at a corner, with no barrier or anything. Of course, there's barely enough room for a single bike to wait, too. Near a major LRT station. #yegbike #yeg

This is at least the 3rd time in the last 10 years that someone has jumped a curb and hit something in a playground zone in my SW neighbourhood. In the past it's been a fence, and a bus stop sign. Is it going to take a kid getting killed for the city to install some traffic calming? #yeg #yegbike

Weekly interaction while cycling through neighbourhoods: get passed by a vehicle while doing ~30 km/hr in a playground zone, watch them speed down the middle of a two-way street, then roll a stop sign while making a unsignalled turn, only to get caught at a stop light. Totally normal. #yegbike #yeg

Would we leave a road crack that's the width of a car tire unrepaired for 1.5+ years? Sigh. #yeg #yegbike

In a 35 minute bike ride, I counted at least 12 motorists run red lights, and 3 in a blatant fashion. Oh we are so cooked for this coming winter. #yeg #yegbike

Getting pretty tired of motorists magically converting 30 and 40 km/hr zones to miles per hour in order to overtake me on my bike. #yegbike #yeg

A crisp, but beautiful day for a ride. #yegbike #yeg

I need to say a few words about Darren.
He was, in many ways, the doctor all doctors needed to be. Compassionate, caring, an advocate and a poet. We were all privliged to have him in our world.
And we are poorer for his departure from it.
Wherever you are, I hope there are paddles and pedals.

The usual multi-use path experience. Not even a glance to check for anything but other vehicles. #yeg #yegbike

A new section of the west-side 111 Street shared-use path is pretty much done... but crossing at 34 Avenue is still a mess. #yegbike #yeg @yegbike.bsky.social

Things you love to see. Pretty sure 80% of vehicles regularly speed through this construction zone. #yeg #yegbike

It appears that the section of Saddleback Road with a painted bike lane that people often use to shortcut between 23 Ave and 111 St in the SW is getting speed bumps installed. #yegbike #yeg

Who thought it was a good idea to fill potholes and cracks in bike lanes with a loose, gravely, chipseal mixture? Sigh. #yeg #yegbike

Avoid the west-side crosswalk along 111 Street at 34 Ave NW. It's a mess of open trenches, torn up sidewalks, missing ramps and confusing detour signage leading to nowhere. #yegbike #yeg #yegwalk

We both stopped at the same 4-way stop, they tried (unsuccessfully) to wave me through, then just forgot I existed? This is why I have trust issues with motorists around bike lanes. #yegbike #yeg

How very fitting that said neighbourhood is full of Jennifer Rice for Council lawn signs everywhere. 🫠 #yegbike
Today I was reminded why I stopped doing laps of my suburban neighbourhood as a daily workout bike ride. Driving home & going the speed limit (😱), I was passed on the right by someone going easily 60+ in the parking lane, who then almost hit another vehicle ahead. Time saved? Nada. #yeg #yegbike

"Why don't cyclists use the bike lane???" #yegbike

The classic SUV corner cut due to shite spatial awareness. Luckily aborted or I probably would have gotten hit (the wide angle makes it seem like there's much more room here than there actually was). #yegbike

Is it too much to ask drivers not to encroach on our paint or act as if it provides some sort of invisible barrier so they don't need to provide the 1 m passing distance? And perhaps stop speeding on these types of streets (I was riding around 40kmh here). #yegbike #yeg

FYI, for those who use the 76 Ave bike lane. Hard to tell with this picture, but this section is pretty much unrideable, unless you're a small child. Opened a 311 request about a month ago but the tree is on private property, and there still doesn't look to be any attempts to prune it. #yegbike
